Subject: Music today

The stuff that is coming out these days, to me, isn't music. It's manufactured rubbish. The so called artists aren't a patch on those from 30 or more years ago. How many groups today could emulate this:

Can't go wrong with Deep Purple or Beethoven for that matter. I pretty much agree with you. It's not that all current bands make manufactured garbage just for profit by the record companies. It's the popular and mainstream contemporary bands that are releasing the bad stuff, the decent modern bands are just not as well known to the masses. But mainstream music in the 60's and 70's probably had the most high quality music when looking at all genres of music as a whole.

The so-called artists aren't selected for their abilities. Many years ago it didn't matter what you looked like as long as you could sing or play. Now it's a bunch of pretty children "singing" and most couldn't play an instrument to save their lives.

While I agree that plenty of musicians these days are rubbish (I'm at high school, so I know all about that!), I don't think it is fair to say ALL current musicians are manufactured rubbish. (I'm sure that isn't what you were trying to say). There are still some great musicians. Take for example, this band, The Paper Kites.

I think some people in high places have taken something from your thread RMG. I just saw on the news that Engelbert Humperdinck will represent England at this years Eurovision song contest.
( Deep Purple next year perhaps??)

I would have to disagree about the quality of music today, in fact I would go as far as there has never been a better time, it's just a matter of knowing were to look. Take away all the commercial manufactured rubbish ( not including the Monkees of course) and you have a greater diversity of choice than ever before.
It's all to easy to look back at a time when we were all far more receptive to new sounds and ideas. As we get older it's all to easy to look back with rose specs. If you look back at my era the 60's and 70's yes there was some great music and God there was some real crap too.
It's not for me to say what's good or bad today, as we all have our own tastes, but I would recommend having a good look around with an open and if possible younger mind.

Deep Purple/Beethoven not a bad combo, and that guitarist Mr Richie not bad for a lad from my home town!

Wonderful link RMG thank you and yes, I have to agree with you, music from 30 - 40 years ago was MUSIC!

Yes, I agree 100% with you! Today's music isn't really music. It's all auto tune and techno crap. People like Lady Gaga have ruined it for me. If she was performing for free across the street I wouldn't bother to even leave my house to go see her! Music sure ain't what it used to be, that's for sure!

Since the 80s I've been complaining about the state of rock music, then after a few years I'll look back and think maybe it wasn't as bad as I thought. In some cases I even end up a fan. I'm just lousy at holding grudges. With people, music...anything. That might happen again with today's music but I seriously doubt it. I don't think I'll ever like what I'm hearing nowadays. Rock n Roll really has died this time. People like Jack White, Dave Grohl and a few others are doing a pretty good job trying to revive it, but I think it's flatlined. I know there's still good out there but like Paulus said you have to dig for it. Problem is, not enough people will.

What happens a lot is that producers will get hold of someone who actually does have talent and feed them a formula that rips the honesty, soul and personality out of their music and burns it. That's been happening a long time but it's worse now. When you start worrying about money and what the public wants to hear too much, you're done. It's the fear of losing that easy pay day that has ruined the whole thing. This is why I've often seen bands play live that I really didn't care for until I saw them play live, where they were free to be themselves.

I think there's always been a mix of good and rubbish - remember Marty Wilde's screeching son? or the profound and haunting lyrics of "Hello, Goodbye"? - and electronic gadgetry isn't that new. Here's ELO playing with their vocoder in the 70s:

And here from 2004 is an outstandingly gifted sixteen-year-old, with no electronics in sight.

Marty Wilde's daughter wanted to sing, but he said no, pop singing isn't for girls, and promoted his son. Here is the son, Ricky, in 1974, presented as our answer to Donny Osmond. (I don't think so.)

Eventually his daughter had a go, and guess what? she could sing. You'll often see Ricky Wilde described as Kim's brother but I've never seen Kim described as Ricky's sister.

I think it's the mainstream that's poor these days. I have bought many new albums this year and last year that have been absolutely fantastic, so it's definitely not music as a whole that is rubbish. Consider back in the days as well, there was actually a lot of rubbish as well, but as time goes on, you focus on what you liked over a long period.

I think it's rose coloured glasses looking at the past. There was a lot of great music back in the '60s and '70s, but also some that would make the worst of today sound profound. "See the tree, how big it's grown...." "My name is Michael, I've got a nickel..." "How do you do Mm Mm I thought Wa-na Na-na Na-na.." "Whoa, the seed inside ya baby, do you feel it growin'..." "Love me little chewy cause you do it so sweet..." "Oh the candy man can..." "We had joy we had fun..." "Tiptoe through the tulips..."

Honestly, I could go on all day.

Apart from the fact that that was Beethoven's 9th, I was a big fan of Deep Purple and Ritchie Blackmore could play a bit! I agree that a lot of today's music is quite chronic compared to the seventies but it's because my ear for music and my heart will always be there. I'm not fond of Gaga or any of the female singers out but I like some of the groups like The Foo Fighters and Kasabian. Boy bands were never my thing and girl bands even less. But thankfully there's still some great musicians out there like Joe Bonamassa, Paul Rodgers, Roger Waters & David Gilmour who are still selling out all over the world. I think it's the same with everyone and whatever musical era you've been brought up in, is going to be your favourite and there's no real comparison.

Agony, I read
"See the tree, how big it's grown...."
"Whoa, the seed inside ya baby, do you feel it growin'..."
"We had joy we had fun..."
and am profoundly grateful that that's all you posted of their lyrics. Thank you! Yes, those are all songs that had me reaching for the sick bag.

I stopped listening to pop music after CCR disbanded in the early 70's. I still figure that Creedence was the best ever, and John Fogerty will go to a special place in rock and roll heaven eventually ! Can't deal with the garbage that is pumped out nowadays !

I am thankful for YouTube, old cassette tapes, CDs and Classic Rock radio stations for trips down memory lane.

There is no such thing as music these days, it is all just a cacophony of sound set to burst your eardrums and as for singing, forget it. All you have is a plethora of screamers. What ever happened to the music of the 60's and 70's. And as for the remark on Lady GaGa I couldn't agree more and already made a similar remark on another thread. She is a joke and a sick one at that. Give me Cliff Richard and the Shadows any day of the week.
