They're one of the most commercially successful glam rock bands to come out of the UK. I have a tough time calling "glam metal" bands metal music and that's not an insult to the genre. At the time all hair bands were called metal bands even though most glam bands had more of a hard rock sound then a heavy metal sound. Reply #1. Mar 03 12, 8:58 AM |

Some of it didn't even qualify as hard rock. Reply #2. Mar 20 12, 6:34 PM |

I didn't mean Def Leppard specifically. Just all those 'power ballads' from the 80s hair bands. Reply #5. Mar 22 12, 9:57 AM |

Nirvana destroyed that type of music. There are still remnants of that type of music, but it's in small venues. The fallout left few remaining members of the original bands. Those that were left intact, play for zombies of that era. They also play at gambling casinos and free concerts at local public functions. Hair (blow) dryers have been returned to the realm of women. They have been for quite along time. Reply #6. Mar 22 12, 12:28 PM |

I do sometimes look at my wife's 'necessities' in the bathroom and think about the old days. Some of it was good music! Reply #7. Mar 22 12, 12:54 PM |

Love Def Leppard, was fortunate enough to see them in concert back in '93. Consider them as a hard rock band. Reply #8. Mar 22 12, 9:32 PM |

Nirvana is another favorite of mine! Kurt Cobain was such a talented guy. :( Reply #9. Mar 22 12, 10:16 PM |

If you are going to classify Def Leppard you are going to first have to look at them before and and after Rick Allen lost his arm. The way I see it, they were Hard Rock before he lost his arm, pop rock in the 80's after he lost his arm and I don't know enough of their stuff since then, but I don't think it's pop rock anymore. I think the entire grunge thing ended it, Nirvana, AIC..all of them. Guns n Roses was kind of in between and then tons of other bands...Chili Peppers, Metallica, Megadeth ( had been around)..Black Crowes, Radiohead, Cracker, Toadies and so on.. Thank God that wave came around. Reply #11. Mar 30 12, 12:41 PM |

I know Alice In Chains is considered grunge, but I really hate calling them that. To me, they transcended that genre and are just metal. Hated Nirvana, didn't care about Pearl Jam, but loved Alice. Def Leppard, to me, has always been in a category called Chick Metal. I'm not saying they didn't have some decent stuff, but let's face it. They catered to chicks. Reply #12. Mar 30 12, 2:36 PM |

I love Alice In Chains as well. They were grouped into the 'grunge' thing purely because of geographics. Soundgardern was excellent as well. Do you remember this one? I turned a couple of twenty somethings onto this song. They had never listened to these guy! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EU4L6THYAbM Reply #13. Mar 31 12, 10:32 AM |

I like almost everything that came out of the Northwest in that period. Of the big four (SG, PJ, AIC, Nirvana) it's hard for me to put them in order and even harder to figure out where they should rank when included with bands from the 60s and 70s. Reply #15. Mar 31 12, 12:30 PM |

If Def Leppard "caters to chicks", they can cater to me anytime they want to, especially Joe Elliott! YOWZA! :) Reply #16. Mar 31 12, 2:57 PM |

Technically, Def Leppard are hard rock, heavy metal, and glam rock, however the 'glam metal' banner only really counts because of the way they set up their shows and dress up. I was lucky enough to see them when they played the first ever concert at Don Valley Stadium in Sheffield, England in 1993 and consider that show to have been in the hard rock style. Reply #20.
