No I have never had a real encounter with a celebrity. I don't think I'm allowed, because I would make a complete fool of myself. I did work with a girl who was once receptionist at a hotel in Manchester and saw lots of celebrities. In the late 1970s when they were filming 'Yanks' in my home town of Stalybridge and surrounding areas the cast stayed there and I asked her about William Devane, who I had such a crush on. She said he was a nice man who liked to play chess with one of the night managers rather than paint the town. My husband in the 1970s worked in the Rep Bar in Oldham and rubbed shoulders with various north west celebrities eg Dora Bryan and lots of the cast of Coronation Street eg William Roache (Ken Barlow), Bill Tarmey (Jack Duckworth) and Thelma Barlow (Mavis Wilton). Hope that counts! Reply #121. Jun 01 09, 2:22 PM |

many people may not know her, but Kassie Smith. I used to sleep over at her house and stay there all the time. She sings an album called girl in A Hurry, and it's great! Reply #122. Jun 13 09, 8:58 PM |

Rowena - you have to name names! One of my son's teachers was Thom Yorke's aunt - does that count? I was at school with David McGillivray, who was an impossibly tall boy with a ready laugh and a shock of red hair, who grew up and became a maker of films, links to which I'd better not post here. Later on, I was at school with Lynne Franks, but I don't mention her too often. People who know what she's like will understand. Most recently I've got to know Martin Benson, who has been a busy actor for a long time: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0072578/ His wife isn't famous but her first husband was Compton Mackenzie, who wrote Whisky Galore. I have met Mary-Chapin Carpenter (got to go backstage after her show one night). Also, sat next to Sissy Spacek and her family at that show. If politicians count, President Lyndon Johnson attended the same church my family attended and I shook hands with him and spoke with him at a coffee hour following church services. Reply #127. I was at school with Nik Kershaw, who was a sort-of big-name singer-songwriter in the 1980s. His first 'hit' was "I Won't Let the Sun Go Down on Me". Reply #129. Oct 11 09, 5:27 AM |

Not me but Mom was in Las vegas when she ran into a tall, light haired man. She just said "excuse me" and kept going. My aunt grabbed her arm and asked her if she knew who she just ran into. Mom, very confused said no. My aunt informed her that she had just walked full tilt into Sting. Reply #130. Oct 13 09, 3:56 PM |

Was working in a roadhouse one evening in the late seventies, when a scruffy looking blond guy with an accent came in, ordered a meal, then after eating, sat talking with the owner, before finally leaving. When he left, I said to the boss "gee that guy looked like Rod Stewart " and the boss replied "that because it was" ! When i finally realised he wasn't joking, he told me they had been at school together, and that Rod called in every time he came to Western Australia, and that he was on his way to Albany for a fishing trip. The only other time is have associated with celebrities was when my sister in law was first elected to state parliament and I went to hear her maiden speech and met the Premier and colleagues and had afternoon tea with them. I'm not sure that she's exactly mega-famous, but Jenny Quayle (aka Anthony Quayle's daughter) came to my English Lit. class at school over 30 years ago, when she was playing Ophelia at the Ipswich repertory theatre. I'd already been to see that performance of 'Hamlet' several times and was hopelessly (teenage boy, yeah!) infatuated with her. After our teacher had introduced her, he asked if anyone had any questions, so trying to impress with my idiosyncratic reading of 'Hamlet', I said to her: 'Everyone thinks you're an innocent virgin, but the truth is you're a whore, aren't you?' It took only a few moments - but the look of shock on her face during those interminable seconds will live with me for ever - before she realised I was referring to her character, not her private life! I have met a few celebrities. No movie actors, but: 1) Doug Gilmour: ex-NHL player. Truly one of the nicest celebrities I have ever met. 2) Jean Beliveau: legendary 1940s/50s NHL player who played in the Canadiens' golden years. He was quiet, but well-mannered overall. 3) I also met the entire Blue Oyster Cult. Got their autographs and talked to them for a few minutes. One of the life-changing experiences in my life. In person, I have seen dozens of NHL players on the streets, and maybe a few movie stars, who knows. Reply #135. Oct 20 09, 11:09 AM |

I have met many celebrities over the years, especially a lot of political ones, including Obama and Clinton. I resemble Michael Moore, the documentary film maker, and I have seen him now and then over the last 15 years or so. The first time we met I told him "People keep mistaking me for you" and he said "I am so sorry." In Boston, during the Democratic Convention, it was crazy. I think I was mistaken for Moore at least fifty times. My favorite response when I say "No, I'm not Michael Moore" is "Are you sure?" (I swear, people have said that) Reply #138. Not sure if a politician counts as a celebrity but I am a friend of Julia Gillard, Australia's Deputy Prime Minister. For the Australian Rules Football fans, I went to high school with Ken Sheldon and Wayne Harmes of the 'famous/infamous' handball that won Carlton a grand final. Reply #139. Mar 19 10, 12:20 AM |
