I would have to say the saddest ending in a film i have seen is Pay It Forward. That one caught me off guard.

William Wallace's last cry of FREEDOM as he was being executed in Braveheart was probably my saddest movie moment.

My favourite happy sad ending is It's a Wonderful Life.

'Away from Her', starring Julie Christie and Gordon Pinsent, about a wife's (Christie's) descent into Alzheimer's and the agony of the husband (Pinsent) as his wife disintegrates. Powerful!

'Shadowlands', the story of C.S.Lewis and his marriage to Joy Gresham. She died of cancer and I bawled! Anthony Hopkins plays Lewis and Debra Winger plays Gresham and they're are superb.

I think I'll have to say Atonement is the saddest one. Not only did it take me completely off guard, but I also loved everything about that movie and how well-crafted it was, so the ending was that much sadder.

Saddest movie? It's toss up between these:

Marley and Me
Born Free (1966)

E.T.

Just to name a few...

I've never cried over a movie, EVER.
I came pretty close though in: The Notebook or maybe Titanic.
Both were great movies, sad endings, well notebook could have been seen as happy.
