Snowman, yours is a fascinatingly diverse group of personal heroes! One seldom sees Darwin, Hogarth and Peter Sellers named together under the same subject heading. Reply #21. Apr 20 09, 12:38 PM |

Well, the three are heroes from different periods of my life. Sellers from my childhood listening to radio comedy and watching I'm All Right Jack and the like; Darwin from when I grew up a bit and became intellectually curious; and Hogarth from when that curiosity turned into cynicism as I got older :) Reply #22. That's sad postcards. The poet John Donne wrote "no man is an island". Reply #23. Apr 22 09, 3:45 PM |

My dad was my hero when I was young and he still is. He is sadly gone now but he took us on so many great holidays on a very tight budget and was just so much fun. He was the backbone of the family and he just kept everything ticking over and everbody in their place. When he died it left an enormous void in our lives and it was never the same again. I look forward to meeting him again in the afterlife. Reply #24. Apr 24 09, 7:31 AM |

DotzBlotz, it's not heroS, it's heroES...unless the Jonas Brothers have become sub sandwiches, in which case it is heroS. Come to think of it, maybe you were right the first time! Reply #30. Apr 29 09, 4:28 PM |

Without a doubt in my mind I would have to say that my hero is my mom. She is the most incredible woman I have ever met, so loving and caring, not only to us but toward everyone she encounters. She is the woman I only hope to be when I have a family of my own someday. She is not only my mother, but also my best friend. She is always there for me whenever I need her and even when I do not even realize that I do need her. Others would be fortunate to have such a mom. Reply #31. May 02 09, 9:42 PM |

Senator Joseph McCarthy has been thoroughly vindicated. After the fall of the Soviet Union, records were released proving everyone he accused of being a Communist WAS a Communist. Liberals are disgusting cowards. They attack decent people after they are dead and can't defend themselves. But the truth will out. God bless "Tail Gunner Joe." Reply #34. May 06 09, 11:06 PM |

My heroes include: 1) My immediate family (Mom, Dad, two younger brothers and a sister older than all three of us). 2) My wife. 3) My nephews (my sister's two sons). 4) Astronauts. 5) Firefighters. 6) The men and women in our armed forces (which include many of our astronauts). 7) Air traffic controllers. (Somebody's gotta keep those planes from hitting each other.) 8) Albert "Happy" Chandler, for having the guts to allow Jackie Robinson and Larry Doby to play Major League Baseball. 9) Al Davis, for having the guts to hire Art Shell as head coach of the Raiders. 10) Brad Rutter, for being THE MAN when it comes to "Jeopardy!" 11) Bob Barker, who hosted "The Price Is Right" for over 30 years. 12) Barack Obama, for bringing about an unprecedented cold snap over the nether regions of the Afterlife while I was still alive to see and appreciate it. I don't know if hero is the right word, but I'm fascinated by the strength of Gen. Charles Gordon. More traditionally, Bobby Kennedy and lately to some degree Teddy Kennedy. And Gene McCarthy. Reply #38. May 18 09, 7:43 PM |

Brad Rutter actually won more money than Ken Jennings did. And he never lost a game. Jennings not only lost to Nancy Zerg, he also lost to Rutter in the big super tournament that was staged mainly to see who could beat him. Reply #39. May 22 09, 4:38 PM |

daver, re your post #34: You've been reading and listening to Ann Coulter again, haven't you? Sorry, but you're both wrong. Many of the people whom McCarthy either named outright or hinted at as being Communist were nothing of the kind. General George Marshall, journalist Drew Pearson, even Adlai Stevenson were on his list. Then, of course, there is the famous debacle of the '57 members of the State Department', none of whom were Communists or Communist-sympathizers. McCarthy couldn't even keep the number straight - it kept changing, daily. And the person who finally led the charge to stop McCarthy's wilder and wilder accusations was none other than a respected Republican Senator from Maine, the redoubtable Margaret Chase Smith. You could call Margaret Chase Smith a lot of things, but liberal wouldn't be on the list! Reply #40. May 26 09, 10:02 AM |
