Scientific: Richard P. Feynman --- He can claim about 80% of the responsibility for getting me interested in physics...and he is a Noble laureate of the deserving kind. The other 20% is shared between my physics teachers at secondary school and college. Any physicist/scientist who refused to conform to concensus or to be intimidated into the status quo. It is the scientists that break ranks and risk their neck that make the advances. Politically: Mo Mowlam Robin Cook Two Labour politicians, the first for her honesty and integrity. She really did want to help people, not just say it like most politicians...the steps forward Northern Ireland took when she was involved with the country are some of the biggest in the history of that part of the world. Robin Cook for standing up to his party and putting his morals before his cabinet position over the Iraq War. Whilst George Galloway was militant in his opposition to the war, Robin Cook opposed it in a very dignified manner...his speech, a great one to watch. I consider myself to be right of centre (on the outdated left-right scale) but the two politicians I look back on with the most respect are left wing. How about that! :) You may have noticed the theme here, and that is that each of these people dared to be different and they challenged the status quo...there are many others but these are the few I decided to bring up. Wilma Mankiller, first female chief of a major Native American people--the Cherokee Nation--in the U.S. She died last week at the age of 64. Here's a 1992 excerpt about her contributions to the world, written by her close friend, Gloria Steinem: http://snipurl.com/vfqsa [womensmediacenter_com] Reply #66. Apr 13 10, 10:49 PM |

Jesus of Nazareth first and foremost, then Princess Diana I would consider a hero of our time, she was an angel here on earth, and this happens to be the 13th anniversary of her departure. Looking forward to seeing Jesus and her in Heaven when I die, soon hopefully. Reply #68. Aug 31 10, 2:32 AM |

Jesus Christ has done so much for me there is none other worthy of being called hero. He gave his life for me and I thank him every day for it. I can't wait until I get to Heaven when I'm able to thank him in person. What a day that will be! God Bless, Jimmy Reply #69. Oct 21 10, 8:57 PM |

One of my high school teachers. Robert Fontenot. Great guy who taught more than was in the books. A wonderful person that wanted his students to understand the question mark. Reply #71. Oct 30 10, 6:31 PM |

Anyone who is willing to lay down their life for something they believe in. I am always so blown away by people who so strongly believe in something that die for it. I also have to say, especially being a New Yorker, the people who risked their lives on September 11. I'm not just referring to the city workers, but the everyday people who went down there everyday, helping to look for people, and clear debris, risking their own health. I had a friend who was going everyday and ended up quite sick. Everyday people doing extraordinary things are heroes in my book. Reply #73. Nov 20 10, 1:58 AM |

All the ordinary people who, in the bomb attacks of 07 July, stayed in the wrecked carriages when they could have walked to safety so that they could help the injured and dying. One man even smashed his way out of an undamaged train trapped in the tunnel to help those in need - true heroes every one of them. Simon Weston - Horribly injured by burns in the Falklands. Now campaigns for other service men and those disfigured by accidents, cancer, burns etc. I have met him a couple of times and he is a lovely man with no bitterness just a desire to help others. "Anyone who is willing to lay down their life for something they believe in. I am always so blown away by people who so strongly believe in something that die for it." nycdmc70, you could easily be talking about the idiots who took all of those lives on that tuesday, or the pilots that took so many lives on that sunday (US exclusively)? UK a day later. C'mon folks, heroes should be very close to the heart. Winners win, the vanquished are vanquished. Pure and simple. Keep your heroes personal. We all have heroes. Before I get lambasted, read the topic. Reply #75. Nov 20 10, 10:23 PM |

I did read the topic and I don't think you have any right to tell me who my heroes should or shouldn't be. I'm so sorry for feeling I had the right to my own opinion. I thought that's what these forums were for. Reply #76. Nov 20 10, 10:53 PM |
