I'd always thought that once you got a blog you had a blog in perpetuity, and could continue to add to it, whether you were a paying member or not. That may have been right at one time, but it isn't now.

I wrote an update yesterday, a few hours after I'd had an email to tell me that my paying membership had expired, and got an "access denied" message. I thought it was a shame to waste it. Off I go...

The old reply to thread function was removed because it got to the point where people weren't even reading the announcements and assuming, by default, that they were somehow being wronged or forgotten or insulted or abused or cheated out of something in some manner.

God of car

Yes, there is a cargod - my car passed its MOT on Wednesday this week. It's always sailed through, till two years ago, when a few things all went at once, and it cost me an arm and a leg to get it right: and a year ago, when it only cost half an arm and a bit of a leg to get it through.

This year, the garage owner said it had passed, and only "a few small jobs" needed doing. He brought the car back the same day but I still haven't had the bill. He keeps putting it off. I just hope the jobs are as small as he made them sound.

I always back the car in, because I'd rather back in than out. So, when they picked it up, they were able to drive straight out. And, when they brought it back, they drove straight in. What's this myth about men and spatial awareness and reversing, when I can reverse into my drive, and two grown men, who work with cars all the time, can't? Huh!

Niece

I'm still in touch with No2 daughter, the calm one who is my information hub, but No1 daughter has, at last, made contact with her parents. I'm sure my SIL was overwhelmingly relieved to hear her voice.

I've spoken to my brother a couple of times recently, and today I said I knew things must be OK because I hadn't heard from SIL since those first two calls when she was climbing the walls with upset and fear. He must have heard my implied message of "I only hear from you/her when things are bad" - he's not daft - but he didn't take the bait. Instead he expressed appreciation of the way I had put on my best authoritative voice and kept her calm. He said "I think she regards you as a sort of mother figure." Thanks, Bro!

Sleep

Please! Last week, I was doing my normal four hours a night, but twice managed to go back to sleep for a while. It makes a world of difference, getting a reasonable amount of sleep. Even my breathing is easier. Last night I probably got about an hour's sleep, and a few hours of half-sleep. Need to catch up before I start climbing my walls. Night!

Anyone want to swap for my hour-at-a-time with a hair-chewing, pillow-stealing cat above your head?

For probably the first time in my life, I've been going to bed early, (9:00!) and I still don't want to drag myself out of bed in the morning! I think I had more UMPH when I got 5 or 6 hours...Go figure!

Glad the car is A-OK, and really hope you can get 5 or more, once in a while;)

Beth, I'm climbing the walls as it is - I think I'd glue the cat to the wall if it kept waking me up! (Apologies to any cats reading this.)

Thanks, VM, so am I. Glad about the car, I mean. How can you go to bed as early as nine o'clock? It's nearly that now, and I'm just about coming to!

supersal1 Lesley, as a cat-lover I find your remarks about glueing cats to the wall offensive in the extreme. There are many cat-lovers on this site who will find your felophobic rant completely unacceptable. Moreover, the minimum age for people to have an account here is thirteen, so there are some account holders who may not be mature enough to realise that you speak in jest (which I sincerely hope you do) and go off and experiment with Tiddles and a pot of superglue. What about the younger children who use this site under parental supervision - their parents may well have a difficult explanation to make about the practice of cat-gluing. Please think before you type in future.

I go to bed very early too and don't want To get up in the morning. I sleep very well. My radio is on all night on a talk show.It doesn't take me very long to go to sleep and if I do wake up I will listen to the radio and usually go right back to sleep.

Sally, as an ex-catlover... I am distraught. I do not have adequate words to apologise for my suggestions of felophobic cruelty. I shall have to go away for a while and think deeply and seriously on the potential import of my words, particularly their effect on young and impressionable minds.

I should also think of somewhere better to put a cat that keeps waking me up. I was thinking ... maybe ... a pie?

Judy, a radio - what a good idea!

I find that as I get older, the less sleep I get. I go to bed at a reasonable hour, but usually wake up 4 hours later and then it is just tossing and turning...waiting for dawn to appear.

I'm still rejecting suggestions that it's age-related. I was crawling into bed and sleeping for seven or eight hours in one go, before tumbling out again. One morning at the beginning of April this year, I slept from three till five, and have never looked back.

I'd have expected something age-related to appear gradually, but I'm doing exactly the same as you - sleeping for four hours, no matter when I fall into bed - and waiting for dawn. Maybe I should stop fighting it, and get a rocking chair and a tartan knee-rug. And take up knitting?

It would take something more dire for me to take up knitting(my apologies to any knitters out there, whether they be young or old)...I don't have the patience for it!

I'm only sleeping 4 or 5 hours most nights. But today I had two naps. Now where did I put that rocking chair...?

It's in the corner, Beth - have you got it? I've got a couple of tartan knee rugs. You're welcome to one of them. And perhaps we should nip out and get some grey hairnets, to keep our buns (chignons?) in order?

supersal1 Don't you find everything is put down to age though? Baby cries, it's colic. Later it's teething. Then they get growing pains as children. Later, teenage hormones account for all sorts of things. Then comes PMT, post-natal depression, then perimenopause and menopause. If you're a few pounds overweight as well you might as well not bother going to the doctor - it'll either be your age, your weight or both.

I visited the doctor once only to see what he had written on my notes the last time: 'GOK'. I asked "What does GOK mean?" It means, he said, that with your combination of symptoms, God Only Knows. Laughter cures most things, it certainly cured that!

Has anyone else noticed that Lesley used a full stop in the title of this blog? Or is it just me who watches tittles, stops, then leaves?

Sally, it sounds like women and children get the "It's your age, dear" response - don't men?

Flopsy, does that make me a pedant? I do hope so - I've always wanted to be a pedant!
