Subject: Are you afraid of the Dentist?

Posted by: xbunny
Date: Feb 15 10

I was at my regular check up in the waiting room ,when the woman next to me was very agitated as well another man, when they began to talk about the dentist,it was total horror stories about the treatment, they had a real terrifying fear. With modern dentistry at our finertips, are you still afraid or have you ever been?Apparently one patient can't stand the sounds, the other one detested the smell. Is a bad experience from childhood that lingers on?

I am not afraid of the dentists at all. Dentists always make you feel better after a night of agony. This is what I taught my children - and what I didn´t taught my husband, he is always rather pale when he goes to the dentist´s.

Have you noticed that toothache usually starts on Friday or Saturday night, when no dentist is available and you must go several miles to the nearest emergency?

Oh every time - just like tonsillitis always started on a Saturday night - or Sunday night when Monday was a bank holiday.

I taught my child that dentists just look at your teeth and don't need to do anything if you look after them. (Your teeth, not the dentists.)

There was nothing I could have said to my husband to make him go. He didn't see a dentist in all the years I knew him. A few years before we met, he'd been in a car accident and got a tooth infection. He saw a dentist who said something along the lines of "I'm not putting my hand in your mouth, you dirty little man," and he swore he would never see a dentist again as long as he lived.

The accident was caused by three drunks in a car, doing a three-point turn in the dark, in a car without lights, in an unlit country lane. He had the trapped ankle and the crumpled car and they were fine. But it was a long time ago so maybe something like that has happened to them since. That would be good. Completely irrelevant to the topic - but good.

I guess that depends on the dentist. I've heard some horror stories lately, and...

Several years ago, I had a root canal done. It wasn't
bad like I thought it would be. I heard all these
horror stories. It wasn't bad at all.

I can't feel the injections in my gums at all, even without gum numbing things. I often wonder if my gums are just dead...

Dentist: "You'll feel a sharp scratch"

Injection pulled out of mouth...I await for him to go back in, perhaps there was a problem with the needle.

Dentist: "The anaesthetic will only take a little while to work, I shall call you when ready"

Me: "Thanks :S"

Thank goodness my mouth went numb otherwise I wouldn't have believed he had injected me at all!

'Jabberwok, if you don't breathe, you are going to pass out.'
'Jabberwok, you can let go of the chair now.'
'Jabberwok, I can't see what's wrong with your jaw clenched shut.'
And memorably
'Sh*t! You bit me' (I was 32)

Terrified. Army dentists when a child.
Didn't find out about injections until I was 20, never had been offered one.
My OH took the children to their appointments, and they have no idea how much I'd rather face giving birth than the dentist.

As a dentist it's nice to know how intimidating I am!

Little shop of Horrors...

[Orin]
When I was younger,
Just a bad little kid,
My momma noticed funny things I did-
Like shootin' puppies with a BB-Gun.
I'd poison guppies, and when I was done,
I'd find a pussy cat and bash in its head.
Thats when my momma said...
[Girls]
What did she say?
[Orin]
She said my boy Ii think someday
You'll find a way
To make your nat-u-ral tendencies pay!
You'll be a Dentist!

You have a talent for causing things pain
Son, be a dentist!
People will pay you to be inhumane
Your temperament's wrong for the priesthood
And teaching would suit you still less!
Son, be a dentist
!
You'll be a success!

:D

I had a lot of dental & hospital appointments when I was young (due to a cleft palate) so by the time I was in my teens, I'd had enough & just stopped going. In fact I was so scared of dentists that I wouldn't even walk past a dental practice in case they dragged me in to make up for lost time! Honest truth.
Came a time when I couldn't put it off any longer & had to begin making regular visits. It took a few appointments before I began to get over my fear/phobia but now I have no problems whatsoever. It helps that techniques have improved through the years and most treatment is now largely painless.

Bad experiences as a child - terrified still even though I know it 'doesn't hurt'

Terrified I have an irrational fear of dentists. My usual dentist is very ill and I had to go to see his locum who turned to to be a delightful man but i will still have sweaty palms and a pounding heart when I go next time. I usually only have to have therm scaled and cleaned but I still get scared.

Nope, becuase I have been through it all. Braces twice, wisdom teeth out, teeth being pulled. Nothing bothers me about going to the dentist.. well except for having to pay the bill. lol

I am not afraid of the dentist because I have not had any bad experiences. Sure there is a bit of pain but it is something I can endure. Modern dentistry makes the visit less onerous.
