Subject: Are you afraid of the Dentist?

Posted by: xbunny
Date: Feb 15 10

I was at my regular check up in the waiting room ,when the woman next to me was very agitated as well another man, when they began to talk about the dentist,it was total horror stories about the treatment, they had a real terrifying fear. With modern dentistry at our finertips, are you still afraid or have you ever been?Apparently one patient can't stand the sounds, the other one detested the smell. Is a bad experience from childhood that lingers on?

Hate it always have. Goes back to my childhood where one stupid nurse said to me " we don't want to touch that nerve do we, or we will be scraping you of the ceiling"

True story.

My first experience was having an abcessed tooth pulled at age 7. Hated dentists after that until after high school when I went school for and then to work for...you guessed it a dentist! Worked as a dental assistant for 19 years even met my husband through that office. I do agree with one comment though, Marathon Man made me almost hide under my seat in the theater, and I was working for the dentist at the time!

No, never been to a dentist except once to use my work benefits and then only for scaling and polishing. We used to have annual checks by nurses in school.

Saw the dentist last Tuesday. Five fillings, some drilling out, polishing and scrapping, cost $239. No injection for pain, and there was none. His work came with a six month gaurantee. No pain or hassle at all. Mind you, Salvador is not the best place for a dentist to make a mess of things.

Yes. I had a broken tooth pulled out of my mouth and when the dentist was pulling it, the novacaine already had worn off. I bit her twice and I drew blood the second time.

Yes, though I've got over it to a reasonable extent over the years. My husband and daughter also have a fear of the dentist. Recently I read of a new discovery of a chemical application that can encourage regrowth of damaged teeth and the hope is that it may eliminate the need for fillings but it's not yet on the market and I don't know how long it will take before it is.

I didn't mind it until a couple of years ago when I had to have my first filling. I'm not scared now, but a bit less comfortable about going.

The things I think abut are: 1) I'm not going to die from dental treatment. 2) It will be over soon. Just concentrate on the music 3) I'm lucky. If I was living in medieval times it would be pliers and no anaesthetic. 4) I did finally find a dentist I trusted, though mine is expensive. 5) I go to the dentist less often but have learned how to look after my teeth better so it's not such a big deal when I go. 6) After going through childbirth the dentist is not such a big deal either.

It' not a great experience but I go regularly because my teeth are quite weak and I want to keep them as long as possible.

My allergy to novocaine was discovered at the dentist.

Apparently, being green faced is not a good idea.

Poor dentist...I hope he's recovered by now.

Why do dentists always ask you questions after they've filled your mouth with something that makes it impossible to speak?

I'm petrified--too many bad experiences. I'd rather go through labor again than have dental work done. Unfortunately, I'm going to have to go this year. Sigh...
