Folk music is often seen as the province of bearded wierdos in Arran sweaters, but it's better than that. Let's hear about some traditional songs that you love to listen to.

This is by Australian singer Lee Kernaghan.. sort of between country and folk: Can't find a youTube clip, but these are the lyrics:
Lee Kernaghan - Changi Banjo lyrics

Well the old man died in the summer when the grass was dry and brown,
The long hard road he'd travelled had finally reached the end,
He was out on the veranda writing letters to his daughters,
When he heard the curlew calling and he just put down his pen.

Well he did two years in Changi in the big Pacific War,
He'd been to hell and back again somehow came though it all,
His most prized possession was the banjo that he made,
As he built it all around him he watched his comrades fall.

He'd play the Changi bango made of tin,
The bridge piece was the Rising Sun from off his slouch hat brim,
Had a broomstick neck and nails to pick his strings,
To the memory of his fallen mates, the Changi banjo rings.

When he came ashore in Sydney like a ghost of skin and bones,
No-one recognised the man behind the haunted face,
No-one knows the sorrows, only he could tell
Of how he's taking one last journey to rest with his old mates.

He'll play his Changi banjo made of tin,
The bridge piece was the Rising Sun from off his slouch hat brim,
Had a broomstick neck and nails to pick his strings,
To the memory of his fallen mates, the Changi banjo rings.

He'll play his Changi banjo made of tin,
The bridge piece was the Rising Sun from off his slouch hat brim,
Had a broomstick neck and nails to pick his strings,
To the memory of his fallen mates, the Changi banjo rings.

To the memory of is fallen mates, the Changi banjo rings.

Very nice, tezza - would be nice to hear the air of it.

daver, since you know Stan Rogers, you're probably familiar with this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZIwzRkjn86w The interesting thing about it is that it is NOT a traditional song. Stories of its origins vary (there was some drinking going on), but basically Stan wrote it in a couple of hours, on a bet.

Oh, yes, I know all about it. I think he said he wanted a song he could sing lead on. I don't think Stan Rogers ever wrote a bad song.

Nice one. But let's get back to the original bit. Here's a couple from a pensioner.

I like Steeleye Span and Maddy Prior too; I liked Gaudete. I also like the Quo, but not when they're so loud you can't hear Prior.

I've really got into folk music of the past few years. Here's a local duo to me, and I've been fortunate to see them on a number of occasions.

Show of Hands.

One more traditional and one more up to date.

Kate Wolf was an amazing talent who unfortunately died at age 44 from leukemia. This is one of her best known songs:

P.P. S The original version of the Album "The Blood is Strong" by Capercaillie is the best. I don't like the remakes but it's hard to find the original on youtube except as individual songs. Here's one as an example https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZVup_-eFcKQ. The originals tend to be posted with nice scenery.
