Well beat this. My husband's name is Lievinus Lievense. It causes some hilarity when people ask you to spell his Christian name and you begin L I E V only to be interrupted with " No! No! That's his surname, I want his Christian name" And it usually takes a few comments before they realise I am spelling his Christian name if they would only let me finish ROFL Reply #6. This is something that amazes me about American TV and movies: Husband Kimmel (Admiral at Pearl Harbour during attack) Wolf Blitzer, Claire Chinault (General during WW2) Mitt Romney, Fox Mulder (Fictional I know). I will add more as I remember. Reply #9. Jul 29 12, 5:21 PM |

Mommakat, I had a similar problem before I was married, as the district I lived in was named for my great grandfather..so I would spell my surname, then they'd ask for my address, so I'd give the farm name, then tell them the district.. no, I've got your surname.. I need the town where you live..so then you'd have to explain... Maybe that's why I got married at 19 !! Reply #10. Jul 29 12, 8:25 PM |

I can relate to that Tezza as you know. But the most hilarious incident was when I was explaining the name to a young girl behind the counter at the local Traffic Office, she stopped, stared at me for a second and said "You're kidding" LOL Reply #11. Jul 30 12, 4:34 AM |

Mountaingoat, "Mitt" is Romney's nickname. His real first name is "Willard", which isn't much better actually :) Reply #14. Aug 07 12, 12:03 PM |

When I worked for the Social Security Administration, I used to keep a list of horrible names people would give their children. Spelling is not one of the strong points for most people in southern Illinois; I remember a little girl named Duhkodah; I eventually figured out that the parents were trying to spell "Dakota." But the very worst name I can recall belonged to a little boy whose parents named him - drumroll - Vermin. We also had a Nuclear Green, but he doesn't count because his parents moved to Little Egypt from Chicago. We had another immigrant from California who went to court and had his named legally changed to Weiner Nobody. And a woman, I swear I am not making this up, named Fonda Cox. Reply #16. The previous generation in my family all use their middle names and not their first names. Not hard to understand when you see my mum and dads real names: Basil and Elsie, but they preferred Frank and Pat. Butros butros Gali always got me. Reply #19. Aug 11 12, 8:17 PM |
