Subject: Unusual First Names

Recently, my brother, a friend, and I were watching a local news broadcast. The female reporter in the field was named Chicagi. Pronounced just like the city but with an 'e' sound at the end. We chuckled a little about that but I got them really laughing when I said..."That's all from the county courthouse. Now back to you, Cincinnato."

When I was a student nurse, we'd occasionally go out to a pub or club for the evening. If we didn't like the guys who were trying to chat us up, we'd tell them our names were Stephi Lococcus (staphylococcus), Malaena, Fay Kallis (faecalis) and Taenia Coli... maybe you need to be in a health related discipline...
We'd also give them a phone number..which, when called, connected you to the morgue at the other major teaching hospital..

Oh and just to add...when I was a student midwife, one of our tutors told us that she had once nursed a woman named Ophelia Dickie !!!

I've met a boy named Zepelin (poor kid) and a woman named Secrete (pronounced liked "secret"--at least that one has an old-time flavor, like when people named their kids Mercy, Fear, Remember, Loyal, etc.)

One time when my husband worked behind the counter at a post office a man came in whose name was Ypres Arscott. Ypres is a French name and was also the site of a battle in WW1 but the English soldiers all pronounced it Wipers (as in window wipers). The man was English so it was clear his parents had chosen to call him Wipers Arscott.

I wonder if Wipers Arscott is related to Lou Rawls? Or maybe even the original Thomas Crapper?

Nobody can pronounce my first name - it's Irish - so I never use it except for official documents

I knew a girl named Penny Coin, not even Penelope. And, yes, her idiot parents named her brother Nick Lee. They had nine months to think of a name and that's what they came up with. No wonder some countries like Brazil only allow names from an approved list.

I had a work colleague years ago who named her son Buffin after someone in the "Mott the Hoople" band apparently and their surname was Beavers. Fast forward a few years and a few guffaws from people, and she changed the story saying it was spelt Buffyn and was a traditional old Welsh name. The child will be an adult by now and I bet he's changed his name.

I was fascinated by the character name 'Rowdy Yates' and wondered if he had brothers called 'Rowdier Yates' and 'Rowdiest Yates.

Shakespeare's daughter Judith's married name was Quiney and she named her first son Shakespeare Quiney. sadly he died at 6 months old and her two other sons did not survive beyond age 21. I've never heard of Shakespeare being used as a first name before.

I oncw worshipped in a parish whose priest was the Rev. Shepherd. He used to joke that with a last name like his, there were only two lines of work he could go into, and since he was allergic to wool....

I always felt sorry for the daughter of a former Texas governor who named his daughter Ima. His name was James Hogg.

A friend of mine was a nurse on the Morley reserve near Calgary, and had children named Chevrolet, Pontiac, Odeon, and Galaxy under her care for various ailments.

There's a singer some of you may have heard of called Lita Ford. Her father named her after his favourite car, and her real first names are actually 'Two Litre Ford Capri'. How anyone could do that to their child is beyond me.

I knew someone who had a schoolfriend called Isaac Hunt. The parents didn't try saying that one out loud I guess. I'll say no more.
