Subject: Wit's End Team Heroes Open Invitational

Posted by: JCSon
Date: Jan 23 13

This virtual blog will function as a meeting place for discussion centered around this Invitational so that facebook users and non-facebook users alike can enjoy the competition together. We already have over 100 players registered representing 24 FunTrivia teams. Please see the game details (originally included in our Wit's End facebook event posting):

Wit's End, a private tournament hosted by Funtrivia.com, invites you to our first Team Heroes Open Invitational.

DESCRIPTION:
This challenge is based on the Team Heroes game design at FunTrivia.com:
1. Your team does not score for the day unless a minimum of 5 team members post a score.
2. Your team score is the average of your top 5 scoring team players.
3. Your participation cannot lower your team score.

Team Heroes games will run every third day at Wit's End (link http://www.funtrivia.com/private/main.cfm?tid=37636) during the month of February and will include only pre-built categories (to ensure fair play). You will have nine opportunities to score for your team on Feb 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, and 27.

TEAM AFFILIATION:
Any players that are members of exisitng FunTrivia teams may represent those teams. Players who are not affiliated with an FT team, whose affiliation is unknown, or whose existing teams are not well represented will be assigned to a Free Agent team formed by the tournament administrator. Alternatively, players may request to form a team of their own.

REGISTRATION:
Players are asked to register participation or check in via the event posted by Wit's End on facebook (link https://www.facebook.com/events/570165523010826/) or by emailing the tournament administrator (JCSon1982@gmail.com). This will help the tournament administrator match names and usernames, determine your team affiliation, and establish a method of contact in case you should win one of the prizes.

PRIZES:
1) BEST TEAM: The team with the best record at the end of the month will receive a feature on the Wit's End facebook page. (VALUE: priceless)
2) BEST TEAM MVP: The MVP of the winning team at the end of the month will receive a 12 month FunTrivia.com gold membership to be used or transferred at the recipient's discretion. (VALUE: $38)
3) SUPERHERO: All players whose scores are in their team's top 5 scores for all nine Team Heroes games will be entered into a random drawing for one nifty trivia-related prize. (VALUE: $15-$25)
4) HERO: All players who make their team's top 5 at least once will be entered into a random drawing for one small trivia-related prize. (VALUE: $5-$15)

OUTREACH:
If you are a member of a FunTrivia team, please post to your team message boards (if it hasn't popped up there already) and invite your team members to participate! Remember, you need at least 5 players per team per day to register a team score. Also, feel free to use the "Invite Friends" button at the facebook event to share with your facebook friends.

Simple question: How will the nine topics to be played the game be determined? I'm sure you'll get a good variety across the categories, but since we can't cover them all 20, what process will you use?

As a suggestion: Let each registered player submit one subcategory, then randomly draw nine of them with no two allowed from the same team or root category.

Good question, Wesley. I've been thinking about this some.

I like your suggestion, but it might actually be quite difficult to put into effect with over 125 players registered and more coming in droves, some on facebook, some via email, FT players and non-FT players, and some for whom I have no means of contact yet.

Also, I'm not sure you noted from the game details, but the selections will all be pre-built categories as opposed to custom-built.

In private tournaments, pre-built categories have a special feature enabled that allows for random question selection for each player. Custom-built categories give everyone the same question set.

While I ask all players to undertsnad the rules of the tournament (e.g. no sharing answers, no researching during play), for an event such as this, I want that feature enabled.

So the available pre-built selections are these:

FunTrivia Mixed Bag
Animals
Celebrities: Easier
Celebrities: More Difficult
General Knowledge 1: Very Easy
General Knowledge 2: Easy
General Knowledge 3: Average
General Knowledge 4: Harder
General Knowledge 5: Difficult
General Knoweldge 6: Very Difficult
Geography 1: Easier
Geography 2: Intermediate
Geography 3: Difficult
History 1: Easier
History 2: Intermediate
History 3: Difficult
Hobbies
Literature 1: Easier
Literature 2: More Difficult
Movies 1: Easier
Movies 2: Intermediate
Movies 3: Difficult
Music 1: Easier
Music 2: Intermediate
Music 3: Difficult
People 1: Easier
People 2: More Difficult
Religion 1: Easier
Religion 2: More Difficult
Religion: Bible Trivia
Science & Technology 1: Easier
Science & Technology 2: Intermediate
Science & Technology 3: Difficult
Sports: Baseball: Difficult
Sports: Baseball: Easy
Sports: General: Easier
Sports: General: Intermediate
World: Australia
World: UK
World Trivia 1: Easier
World Trivia 2: More Difficult
World: Canada
World: Europe

Wit's End generally focuses on custom-built quizzing, but we do feature pre-built pools occasionally. Other private tournaments are often purely pre-built. That also brings up selection bias, since some players who participate in private tournaments routinely will have plenty of exposure to certain categories above. I have some idea of what those are and will probably want to exclude those.

Question: must a player join Facebook to participate? Someone on my team responded he is interested but isn't on Facebook.

Hi Linda! No, a facebook account is not required at all.

Wit's End has a presence on facebook. The purposes of the facebook event posting are these:

1) Provide details.
2) Registration for facebook users

Non-facebook users can get the details by viewing the facebook event posting without having to log in. Alternatively, the details are now posted in this blog as well. And registration is open to non-facebook users via the email provided.

I know the pre-built ones although we're never using them with the Cat People (we do have our own custom selection we're running every day, general stuff plus anything related to cats).

I agree you do want the cheat protection just in case, so I suppose you might just want to pick a broad spectrum of nine different topics at intermediate to advanced level. Of those 12 that have different difficulty levels, removing General (it's supposed to be Heroes-style) and probably Celebrities (somewhat covered through Music, Movies and People) would leave just one more than needed.

The last one to go might be World (somewhat infringes on Geo / History). I guess that's how I would build it if it were my tourney - but it's all your call of course :)

Indeed. It's just the name I use to log in on a lot of sites (I would have probably picked something else had I known I would be here for more than just playing and occasionally writing quizzes)

Well, I know how that goes. If I had known it was so difficult to change one's XBOX 360 handle, I'd have chosen something other than Bulldozer1982. Haha.

That's funny because I grew up mear a place where buldozers were made until 1988.

Haha! Well, my handle has no connection to bulldozers.

Happens I picked it to match my Steam ID back when I was playing Day of Defeat online with my wife's brothers. We were named after a fictional comic book World War II US Army infantry unit called Easy Company.
