Subject: Metallica or Megadeth?

Posted by: sableka

Many years ago, Metallica and Megadeth were great rivals. After Dave Mustaine was kicked out of Metallica, he swore to make a faster and better band than Metallica-which was the beginning of Megadeth. I love them both, but the better of the two, in my opinion, is Megadeth. What's everybody else think?

I honestly have to go with Megadeth. I'm just getting sick of listening to Metallica. I never get tired of Megadeth's songs.

Yeah, Megadeth.... Love him or hate him, Mustaine never sold himself out.

"Mustaine never sold himself out"

Let's chat about this, shall we? How do you define selling out? Is it changing your style of music? He sure did with "Risk." Are we defining selling out by constant mainstream attraction? Well, Megadeth sure was all over MTV at one time or another, just like his former band. Perhaps selling out to you is playing with a symphony like Metallica did? Check this out...

It does seem to me that Dave Mustaine "sold out" like his former mates did.

Tough one. I like them both, but it has to be Megadeth. 'Peace Sells' and 'Hangar 18' are both better than any of Metallica's songs.

Metallica hands down.
If you are going to bash Metallica for going sharply and steadily downhill after the first five albums (which you certainly can) you have to do the same with Megadeth. Both held on for far too long, but that doesnt invalidate their best work in my eyes.
And prime against prime (which was more or less of eaual length for both)...Metallica was just better.

The music charts and amount of albums sold paints a clear picture of who the world thinks is a better band!

I like to listen to both, but I do have more Metallica albums in my music library. I do prefer the older stuff however!

Both. I'll admit that this stuff isn't for everyone. If it WAS for everyone, then it wouldn't have any business being metal. It would be disco or rap or just anything with a simple, steady, monotonous beat and rhythm all day long. I can't even begin to describe how thankful I am for being blessed with the ability to listen to anything and everything and appreciate all the different things that music has to offer without getting a tummy ache. If you are like me and you just can't get enough of the adrenaline rush that serious metal provides, then you have to look at the bottom line here. Both of these bands are more than capable of delivering a serious heavy metal beatdown like nobody's business. Period. As for who is better and who has or hasn't sold themselves out and all of that, you need to ask yourself a question or two. Are you a professional musician or are you involved in the music industry professionally in any way? Do you know exactly all that goes on in the professional AND personal lives of any of these fine musicians, or know every detail of what goes on behind closed doors between them and the record execs? We all know the answers to that for the most part, so why not just kick back and take a chill pill and enjoy what people have to offer, and if you can't do that without getting upset or offended or whatever, then just find another station or walk away.

Very well said, sadwings. I myself would say Megadeth, because if you dig deep into the beginnings of both bands, particularly Metallica, Dave Mustaine's innovative, guitar playing, amazed and influenced every one around him, as there was just no one else playing anything like what he was doing. (That is almost a word for word quote by James Hetfield) and contrary to popular belief, much of the basic structure of Metallica's early songs were written by Mustaine. (Just listen closely to "Call of Ktulu, and for me, doesn't really sound like anything from either bands, and makes you wonder what could have been if Mustaine stayed in the band).

But to stop rambling on, I'm not taking anything away from Metallica, they came up with some great songs, and I don't at all buy into the "they sold out" crap, they're artists, and took the direction they wanted to go, and at the end, went back to where they started with Death Magnetic, which is a phenomenal album. I'll end with my opinion that "Rust in Peace" has the most complex, original, just plain insane guitar work than any album up to that point, by any band.

Ingenious perception, brother. After all that has been said, maybe what we should really be asking ourselves is this..........Stagedork or Radio Nerd? I mean, everyone knows that Stagedork make Megadeth look like Barry Manilow, and they make Metallica look like Weird Al Yankovic. By the same token, Radio Nerd make Megadeth look like the Carpenters, and they make Metallica look like the Partridge Family.

How is that even possible, some of you might ask? Well, you have to look at the lineups in both bands. You wanna talk about phenomenal guitar players, just look at Bartholamew Noise from Stagedork. I mean, every one knows that Noise makes guitarists like Mustaine and Steve Vai look like Andy Griffith. Then there's Percival Clownboy from Radio Nerd. Clownboy makes guitarists like Kirk H. and Joe Satriani look like Tiny Tim. On top of that, both bands have drummers that make Neil Peart from Rush look like Will Ferrell's character in Stepbrothers, both bands have bass players that make Steve Harris from Iron Maiden look like the bass player from Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids, and both bands have vocalists that make Rob Halford from Judas Priest look like Bob Dylan. Now before any of you get mad at me, Mr. Dylan is a great musician and a phenomenal songwriter, but as a metal vocalist? Give me just a little bit of a break!

Anyway, to conclude my clownish comparisons that are hopefully amusing some of you, maybe we should let the next cd from both bands decide once and for all who is the monster baddest in the metal-ravaged universe. Stagedork or Radio Nerd? They both have a release coming out in March. For Stagedork, it's going to be called "We're Scared to Death of Your Rules" and the new cd for Radio Nerd is called, "You Bullies Better Quit Picking on Us". So get ready for the ultimate war between the ultimate warlords, and get ready for the kind of brutal metal beatdown that will leave you bleeding on the floor!
