I know that "Something" by the Beatles has been covered many times. I always found this one fascinating.

Frank Sinatra - "Something"

Ted Nugent - "I Want to Tell You". Great little song by The Beatles. I think Ted did a good job. Sounds like lots of respect.

Elton John's version of the Beatles song "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" is the better of the 2, in my opinion. Don't get me wrong, I love The Beatles but his version is amazing!

Jeff Buckley's cover of Leonard Cohen's 'Hallelujah', to me is the superior version.

My favorite covers are "All Along The Watchtower" by Jimi Hendrix and "With a Little Help from My Friends" by Joe Cocker.

Most covers are not nearly as good as the originals though I agree with Jimi and Cocker outdoing the original.

Others that did it better-

Me and Bobby McGee – Janis Joplin, 1971 (Kris Kristofferson)

Hurt – Johnny Cash, 2002 (Nine Inch Nails)

Blinded by the Light – Manfred Mann’s Earth Band, 1976 (Bruce Springsteen)

I Love Rock and Roll -Joan Jett and the Blackhearts (The Arrows)

I believe there is a lot of bias in favor of groups or singers from the 1990's/2K as many of the internet writers are too young to remember the original artists. Examples of this include the following:

Sweet Jane – Cowboy Junkies, 1988 (Lou Reed Cover)
The Weekend - Dirty Diana (Michael Jackson Cover)
Nirvana- The Man Who Sold the World (David Bowie Cover)-Though in honesty Lulu did best.

My favorite cover is probably "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" by Joan Baez. I like her version much better than the original by The Band.

Being an 80s fan, I love the covers that came out in the 80s and despise the covers of 80s songs done by 90s and 2000s bands. A couple that I know off the top of my head are Respect Yourself by Bruce Willis (The Staple Singers) and You Can't Hurry Love by Phil Collins (The Supremes). There was an 80s cover of The Supremes' Baby Love that I liked, too, but I've never been able to track it down. It isn't even in Wikipedia.

It was Wings! My favorite covers are "Daddy's Home" and "The Water Is Wide", both by Cliff Richard. His versions are the best I've heard.

One of my favourite artists of all time, James Blake, recently covered "The Sound of Silence" by Simon & Garfunkel on his radio residency. He dedicated it to his recently deceased friend. What I love about it is how he nailed the mood of the original, while making the sound of the cover entirely his own.

James has also NAILED a cover of "A Case of You" by Joni Mitchell before, so much so that I MIGHT like his version better than the original.

Another excellent cover is Lorde's version of "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" by Tears for Fears. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DaVA6sgOpws (Speaking of Tears for Fears covers, Gary Jules' "Mad World" anyone?)

Bon Iver has done some amazing covers before ("Love More" and "Bruised Orange (Chain of Sorrow)" spring to mind), and I think his version of "I Can't Make You Love Me" takes the cake. It's so emotional and gorgeous, his voice and piano ability is just something else entirely. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q3VjaCy5gck

Also, a local radio station here in Australia called Triple J has a weekly segment called Like a Version where artist cover songs, and there have been some excellent covers in the past. Take this CHVRCHES cover of Arctic Monkeys' "Do I Wanna Know?" for example. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CjwwmFrsX_E

Oh, and of course there is Johnny Cash's version of Nine Inch Nails' "Hurt". Always gets the tears flowing.

I'm sure I'll think of more excellent covers as they come.

Red red wine covered by UB40. Think Neil Diamond did the orginal.
I will always love you covered by Whitney Houston. (She sings this one with such passion). (Original by Dolly Parton)
Groovy kind of love - Phil Collins originally by The Mindbenders.
These are just some more I thought are good ones.
