What's the best concert you've ever been to?

What made it so special?

1997 at the Wolverhampton Civic Hall, England.

Coal Chamber, MachineHead and Napalm Death...

The crowd turned this Victorian era building into the world's loudest and heaviest bouncy castle for the duration of the show.

First concert I ever went to. The Who at Shea Stadium 10/13/82. Only concert I've been to that was so good the opening act's (The Clash) set has since been released on CD. I spent the next 20 years or so going to 300-400 concerts trying to catch the magic of the first one. I came close a couple of times but never quite there.

The Clash, Napalm Death, I'm so in awe already! WOW!

Public Image Limited, Miami, 2014 (maybe 2013.) Their first US concert in almost 2 decades (at least that's what I've been told.)
Front row, pushed up against the railing. John Lydon was sick as a dog and kept spitting and coughing into this bucket. They played an excellent, blistering set with an amazing playlist.

My first ever gig attendance was at the Recreation Ground in my home town of Weymouth, Dorset in 1970 at the age of ten. On the bill were Medicine Head, Caravan and (I'm not totally sure) Barclay James Harvest.

Probably Barbra Streisand's in 1994 (her first live tour in almost 30 years) which was a wonderful show and made even better for us because we were in the fourth row.

The best concert I went to may have been my first time seeing Shinedown. They began the concert behind a large white curtain with their symbol emblazed on it. The song choice? My favorite one, of course! The sheet was ripped down right when the chorus began. It. Was. Awesome!

Richard Thompson, solo acoustic show, I THINK 2007, in Phoenix, Arizona. He was INCREDIBLE!

In the 1970s I saw Free and also Jethro Tull at Birmingham Town Hall. I feel lucky to have seen them live. My musical tastes are varied so I've also hugely enjoyed folk music artists, like Richard Thompson, who was previously referred to, and John Renbourn who was a brilliant guitarist, now sadly deceased.

1986 in the incredibly microscopic town of Hinkydink, Oklahoma, out in the middle of this huge, muddy field, I got to see The Sissies and Stagedork open up for the Noisy Cowards. Must have been 60, 70 people there. The Sissies busted out right off the bat with Let's All Go to Sleep, I mean like ka-BLAM! People started dropping like flies left and right straight into the mud........SPLAT!......SPLAT! .....SPLAT! I mean, I was THERE, man! They did Please Don't Hurt Me and Scared to Death and just all there cool songs. Then Stagedork came out and just started hurting themselves, you know, tripping and falling over stuff while they were trying to play their incredibly irritating songs. The stage was just a bunch of cheap, rotten lumber and plywood just all slung together. Stagedork tore about half of it down just trying to look all cool and bad. The other half got torn down by the 20 or 30 people who weren't sleeping in the mud when they got mad at Stagedork and they wanted to see the Noisy Cowards. But the Cowards couldn't come out to play because the whole stage had been torn down. Then that was right about when a bunch of cops pulled up all at once like ka-POW! They all jumped out and ran people down and just started beating the crap out of people with their sticks. I got slammed right in the side of the head and I went flying and I hit the ground hard - right in the MUD! Next thing I remember, I woke up in jail all covered in mud! Did you guys see Tommy Boy when Chris Farley took Rob Lowe cow tipping and they got all covered in mud? That's about what I looked like. But seriously, all that stuff I just said, that didn't really happen. I was just clowning around, you guys! Peace out!

Disturbed, without a doubt, a couple of years ago. I've been to a few live concerts and sometimes the biggest names are the worst live, I've found. But Disturbed are amazing. David Draiman is a real entertainer, and they know how to keep the crowd involved. I got chatting to a lady who was there to see the third act, Avenged Sevenfold, and had never heard of Disturbed. After their fifteen song set, she was ready to run out and buy every CD they've ever made!

I attended the magnificent concert that the great metalmad spoke of in reply #12, and I am still tripping out hard over it. I was one of the ones who fell asleep on my feet and fell face first in the mud when the Sissies exploded with their smash hit Let's All Go to Sleep, but I awoke to the loud crashing noises when Stagedork was accidentally destroying everything. I have never experienced anything like that in my entire life. I have been a devoted Stagedork fan ever since and I have tons of Stagedork memorabilia and bootleg recordings and concert footage of them Stagedorking all across America with explosive metal bands like Running Scared, Fruitlord, Peaceful Serenity, and Wimp Parade, just to name a few.

What a coincidence that you should happen to post on this thread just right after I mentioned it to Rubytops over on the Favorite Lyrics thread, Jo. Hee hee! You stop that! :-p So I guess you know metalmad up there was me, right? I wish I wouldn't have had to go and change my username like I did, but it happened and there's nothing I can do about it now. I always thought metalmad was a pretty cool name.

Anyway, I know exactly what you mean about a lot of big name bands not sounding all that great live. I've been to a few concerts like that, but most of them were pretty good. Want to know what the best concert was that I really did see for real? You aren't going to believe this, but it was only a one song concert. Did you ever see the Gilligan's Island episode when The Mosquitos came to the island for some peace and quiet, and Gilligan and the Skipper and the Professor and Mr. Howell dressed up like hippies and exploded with their hellhammer island metal? Yeah, that's the one right there. :-p I'm gonna go see if I can find a link to that! :-)

Here's the mind-blowing concert footage I meant to put down last time. Be prepared for the most explosive charge of blitzkrieg metal ever recorded anywhere on earth. These guys make Priest, Maiden, Metallica, Anthrax, Accept, Suicidal Tendencies and Pantera combined look like Josie and the Pussycats. Don't say I didn't warn you!

Steven Wilson. No close second.

I have seen probably 50 or 60 concerts over the years including most of the big ones. Pink Floyd, Van Halen, Metallica, U2, The Cure, Def Leppard to name a few.

Steven Wilson is an audio and visual perfectionist. Best sound quality at perfect volume (not too loud) along with special effects and cinematography was amazing. Best part is the show was in a small venue so I could be 20 feet from stage. Can't wait to see him again!

Some other shows that I thought were pretty awesome was Pearl Jam when they came to Athens Georgia. Live was also really good in concert. Of course Pink Floyd was legendary but was in a huge football stadium so I am sure they could be better in a smaller venue.

You have seen a lot of bands that I would love to have seen but never have. The only one out of all that you listed that I have ever seen is the almighty Metallicats. I've probably only been to about a dozen or so concerts in my entire life.

Saw Suicidal Tendencies and Candlebox with the Metallicats. Saw Priest twice, once with Slayer and I can't even remember who was with them the first time I saw them. Saw Ted Nugent, saw a show with Slaughter, Winger and KISS, saw a great Motley Crue show, and believe it or not, I saw Loverboy mop the stage with ZZ Top. I was pretty far in the back, and I would have had to have been blind not to notice that the crowd was moving around a lot more and getting into it a lot more when Loverboy was playing.

I've seen what can't possibly be less than 5 times as many bar bands, and only one out of them all completely blew my mind and left me wondering why on God's green earth they were in a bar and not a stadium. They went by the name Hatterfox and I saw them in that sleepy little town of Pascagoula, Mississippi in '82 or '83 at a rockin' little place called Thunder's Tavern.

I was in a band once and they even made a movie about us. I don't know if you have ever heard of it, it was called The Song Remains The Same. Just kidding! :-p Like I'm just so sure!

Awesome! You must be John Bonham! I guess the reports of your death we're grossly overrated! Lol

Motley Crue did put on a great show!

I love live music when it is well done. My favorites are more progressive but I can get into just about anything that is well done. When I was in college there was an awesome jazz bar that my wife and I would go to weekly. I really enjoy when musicians get lost in improv.

On my current wish list are Opeth, Gazpacho and Riverside. I seriously considered going to see David Gilmour a few years ago but it was a plane ride away and tickets were $800 a piece. Yikes. Couldn't justify $2500 for my wife and I to go. But I can't imagine David will be touring too many more times. Of the more metal variety I'd like to see Megadeth or Iron Maiden. Can't say I have heard much great from Maiden since the early 90s but their 80s stuff was awesome.
