Sad to hear that Leonard Cohen has died. He was not as prolific as Bob Dylan but maybe his talent was as strong though he never got a Nobel prize.

Truly awful, could this year get any worse? He will be missed.

Leonard Cohen was a poet. I do not believe that anyone will ever be able to craft words like he did, each line of lyrics in his songs was a wonderful thing.
As he said in his song "Traveling Light" released this year,

"Traveling light
It's au revoir"

Au revoir, Leonard. Thank you for all the beauty your work has given the world.

Ahhh, Leonard...

What an incredible talent. What a tremendous legacy of songs! Definitely in my Top 5 favorite artists.

I would heartily advise reading the extremely well-written article in the October New Yorker about Cohen's life and works.

He joins the greats in the Tower of Song.

Leonard was still recording music in his 80's and doing it with the same sort of fire that he has had throughout all his life.

Well done, sir, well done.

It was my brother who first introduced me to Leonard Cohen.
Some of his songs were very dark, like the songs on his album "Songs of Love and Hate". I'd heard nothing like them before but his songs were unforgettable at the same time. He was a great poet.

So which Leonard Cohen songs are people's favourites here? I would definitely put "First We Take Manhattan" at the top of my list, followed closely by "I'm Your Man". These two alone show ample proof of Cohen's brilliant poetic talent!

I think Cohen's best ALBUM is "I'm Your Man" (and I think it was my first Cohen album, as well. I got the Cohen bug after being blown away by the songwriting skill I encountered on Jennifer Warnes' album of Cohen covers, "Famous Blue Raincoat".

As for my favorite Cohen songs, it's hard to narrow them down, but I would have to go with the following three:

"Famous Blue Raincoat"

"Yes, and thanks, for the trouble you took from her eyes
I thought it was there for good so I never tried"

"Bird On The Wire"

"I saw a beggar leaning on his wooden crutch,
He said to me, "You must not ask for so much".
And a pretty woman leaning in her darkened door,
She cried to me, "Hey, why not ask for more?"

and

"Joan of Arc"

"Now the flames they followed joan of arc
As she came riding through the dark
No moon to keep her armour bright,
No man to to get her through this very smoky night"

Joan of Arc slays me, particularly the Warnes/Cohen duet version.

I can't say which is my favourite because it changes according to my mood but "Diamonds in the Mine" sticks in my mind. I can only describe it as gleefully grim with a cheery little tune. In fact it's so black and depressing it makes me laugh because otherwise you'd cry and the life spirit just can't take so much grimness. My friend and I used to take turns to make up songs like Leonard Cohen and we'd do alternative lines and try to outdo each other in miserableness and end up laughing. I like that whole album Songs of Love and Hate but don't listen to it if you're seriously depressed.

Avalanche is another good one from that album. I'm not sure what it's about but it's rather menacing.

There's a new Music quiz posted this week on Leonard Cohen. I probably should not say much more...
