Nice work Sue, I completely missed the hidden answer to 18d!

22a European and not, say, one with white skin? (9)

European = NORWEGIAN then not = NOR + say = EG + one = I within WAN white?

23d Rebels head away from very dangerous situations (5)

Rebels = RISES with head (first letter) away from CRISES (very dangerous situations)

Wow! The congratulations message has arrived, that's a relief!

I found this one harder than usual, but perhaps it's because of too many late nights recently? lol

Thanks again Sue for doing the honours!

Chris and I are sitting out today and tomorrow in what is described as catastrophic fire conditions. I must just go and finish getting everything ready in case there's an emergency.
(Don't worry, nothing much happening right now, but there is never much warning should something occur)

I'd better clarify that further - Chris and I live in different towns in the same area (Adelaide Hills - Fleurieu).

Same to you, Chris. It's strange, living on a tinderbox, with no actual problem, just the distinct possibility of a catastrophe. I keep thinking about what happened recently in California.

I sincerely hope you are both able to avoid the fires, it rarely causes such problems here in the UK.

We don't have wildfires in my part of North Carolina, but we are on alert during hurricane season. Here's hoping you both get to stay home in safety.

I just visited my mother, who lives about 20 minutes away. Walking outside is like being hit in the face with a blast furnace, and this was before lunch. Glad to be at home with the curtains drawn. Just as well I visited her though; she had switched her air-con off. Her little house heats up fast without it.

Ahhhh the bliss. Temp dropped 10 degrees (from 41 to 31) in an hour earlier this pm and is now a balmy 22. No major fires reported AFAIK.

It is a little cooler, but I suspect you have had a sea breeze through. No such luck here yet (9.30 pm).
