27A It turned, stayed low, and straightened Could this be TIDIED? IT backwards plus stayed low - maybe DIED would fit? I dunno. Incidentally, Ivor, I believe William Golding was once your English teacher. His name was taken in vain on our national broadcaster last night. It seems there is a book which references a group of boys who were marooned on a tropical island decades ago, and not discovered for over a year. Unlike Ralph, Piggy and co., these boys survived harmoniously - and it is a true story! The book is 'Humankind" by Rutger Bregman, and he has a much less dystopian view of human nature, it would seem. Reply #5932. May 13 20, 6:40 PM |

Yes Sue, William Golding was once my English teacher, but as I may have mentioned previously was not really suited to teaching. He appeared to be in a distant world of his own much of the time, and spent much of the time simply reading works of Shakespeare to us. Whilst I know the general narrative of "Lord of the Flies," it's not a book I've ever wished to read owing perhaps to it's subject matter, although conversely I quite happily waded through Orwell's "1984" recently. Here's a link to an interesting article on the Rutger Bregman book: https://www.theguardian.com/books/2020/may/12/humankind-a-hopeful-history-by-rutger-bregman-review Reply #5934. Yes, I read "Lord of the Flies" as a young woman, and it made me feel physically ill. The story disturbed my dreams for some time. It's good to know that a handful of youngsters could manage to thrive as a group without adult supervision. I watched a couple of interviews with the person who found the boys after 15 months, and also with a couple of the boys, now grown men. The rescuer was allowed to set up a fishing business in the region and subsequently employed and became friends with a couple of the lads. I found it an encouraging idea in these sad times.
