18 across could be 'Ascot' - an English racecourse, or 'a Scot'.

19 down looks like 'test out' which means 'try' - most of 'tea' followed by 'stout'.

Is 6 down 'earnest' - 'ear' for 'attention' and 'nest' for 'home'?

Drawing the grid to fill in the answers helps a lot. I don't want to hog all the clues, so I thought I'd leave it at that and let somebody else have a go. Although I'm still stuck on 27 across.
