Subject: RIP Tom Petty

Posted by: strnog1
Date: Oct 02 17

The death of Tom Petty was just officially announced.

I saw Petty twice live, once at the Blossom Center south of Cleveland some 8 years ago and most recently at Hyde Park in London in July of this year. My wife and I were debating where to go on vacation during the summer and the presence of Tom Petty and Stevie Nicks on the same bill was the clincher for a trip to the UK. It was a great concert with Petty playing a number of songs from his "Wildflowers" album rather than just sticking to the hits. Respected him for that.

Of the 48,000 songs on my computer, I have rated only 66 of those at 5 star songs, which to me means you couldn't make a more perfect song.

Two of those 66, "Breakdown" and "American Girl" were Petty songs.

My favorite American artist by a long shot.

Thanks, Tom. You'll be missed.

I can't even believe this... This day just keeps getting worse and worse and worse. All that carnage in Las Vegas, and then my beloved Tom died.

I had a dream last night that Tom Petty died, and it was just a bizarre nightmare, a weird fever dream. It didn't make any sense. And now, he actually has, and it REALLY doesn't make any sense. This feels like I just lost a brother. I can't even explain how terrible this feels. It makes me sicker than I already feel. I need Roy Orbison to sing "Crying" right now. Or Tom to sing "Breakdown."

"It's alright if you love me
It's alright if you don't
I'm not afraid of you running away
Honey, I get the feeling you won't

There is no sense in pretending
Your eyes give you away
Something inside you is feeling like I do
We said all there is to say..."

"Yes, now you're gone
And from this moment on
I'll be crying, crying
Crying, crying
Yeah, crying, crying
Over you"

First they thought it was a ruse, but now we know it's true. So sad, he would have been 67 on the 20th. Always sad to learn of someone who touched our lives for so many years passing.

I was in bits when I heard Tom had died. I've been a fan of his since I was around 13-14 years old. One of the very first albums I ever bought was his "Damn The Torpedoes" album. I loved that album, every song. His music has been a huge part of my life and what an impact he has had on me as well as the world. I will miss him greatly. May he rest in peace.
