Subject: Write A Haiku

Posted by: UmberWunFayun
Date: Aug 13 18

Haiku is a beautiful form of Japanese poetry, where the feelings evoked by the words are the most important thing. Traditionally containing references to nature, weather, or the elements, nowadays a modern haiku can have any subject, as long as it follows the strict rhythm of three lines, containing 5, 7, and 5 syllables for a total of 17. Showcase your creative side, let out the poet within, and Impress us all with your writing skills! To start you off, here's my favourite modern haiku :

So flopsy, I guess
You've never been attacked by
A hormonal doe

My experience
Working with small fluffy things
Was cautionary

I have several scars
Not from big dangerous dogs
But hamsters and buns

I had a pet croc
Never bit me or scratched once
He ate rabbits whole

Sectant, that poor child
Watched sitting on her mom's knee
How messed up is that?

But then I saw 'Jaws'
When I was four years old too
And on the big screen!

My mom took me there
Things were different back then
When I was a kid

Forty years ago
No-one batted an eyelid
No 'Nanny State's then

Hey Um, stick with Bugs
And Daffy and all that lot
Will make you laugh heaps.

And that cute rabbit
In Python's Holy Grail pic
A funny bunny

Tim the Enchanter
And that small cute white rabbit
With big pointy teeth

Can't beat Monty Python
Surreal and hilarious
Best bunny for sure

Can't afford horses
So they bang coconut shells
How brilliant is that?

Okay, I tried to stay true to the Haiku rule, but I’m positive I failed at some parts. I’m sorry, it’s not out of disrespect, it’s because I’m simply dreadful at this! But I had fun.

Night of the Living Dead
Saw it at 6, woe is me
Still scared at 33

Still scared at any age
George Romero was the MAN
His dreams gave me frights

Genius made some more
New frights with new zombies yikes!
What an honor to watch

Now I make films too
Nothing near that quality
But his zombies live

My prose is the worst
But hey, I’m trying hard here
To spread George’s word

You had better pray
The zombies don’t come for you
And stay on the screen

Co-workers think wow
That girl looks crazy counting
Out loud here at work

Syllables are hard
When you are supposed to be
Hard at work like me

Clive Barker: so good
A writer responsible
For my odd strangeness

Another genius
Barker has become to me
A writer beloved

Scary, weird, all above
His writing is poetry
Disguised as scary stuff

Zombies scare me daft
They're The Viking's favourite films
I 'watch' with closed eyes

Too scary for me
Although some are quite funny
Like 'Shaun Of The Dead'

Jen. When in doubt, count them out. If not with fingers, silently in your head, one line at a time. Like a child learning to read. It may seem naff but it works. Always have in the back of your mind the following refrain. "Syllables, syllables, syllables, not words, words, words."

Five syllables here
Here there are seven of them
Let's do five again

(Loved what you posted)

Don't forget consent form for school outing next week. And you can't sit next to Chloe at the front of the bus. Remember what happened last time? You two are far too unruly and we're getting the same bus driver. He's only just recovered from the trauma.

Just marked your American History essay. Very good. I think you'll ace end of year exam. Well done.

(Sorry, can't help being a prat.)

So you make films, Jen?
That is very interesting
I'd love to hear more

So many stories
Not enough time to read them
Must dive in hands first.

I prefer novels
Movies so hard to follow
Reading gives me joy

Jazmee, you astound
To observe so much around
Despite your ailment

So impressive too
It puts me in blushing shame
Your sweet poetry

When I was a kid
Grandfather gave me a gift
This is it, I thought

Oh, the camera!
I went everywhere with it
Never left my side

Made movies for school
Made movies with family
Report cards were great

Delight in filming
Holding camera steady
Not easy with such bliss

Not one movie, no,
Two different movies out
Theater spoiled me

That day, oh that day
Bubbly joy overcame me
Thank you, grandfather

Sectant, please, I already promised Chloe I’d sit next to her! You know she breaks out if she gets upset! And I caught Jim cheating off of Sherry, I think he should get in trouble for that.
Oh, also, Sara said she has cheerleading practice after school so she can’t meet up with Betty.

Jen, you're doing great
everybody else is too
having fun's the key.

We all have talents
Can't be great at everything
That would be boring.

We each have to learn
Something special defines us
Knowledge takes some time.

Those fun days at school
No mobiles or Internet
No Kardashians

Jen, could you please tell all involved that cheerleading practice has been cancelled until whoever stole the school mascot brings it back. Alive, preferably.

And this rampant cheating amongst students must stop. We're having enough problems in this area with staff members. You'll never guess who I caught Mrs Temple with in the school gymnasium. After hours. On the same mat. Mr Kalojnic, the janitor! There's a bit of gossip you can add to the school magazine. I assure you though, it's not mere gossip.
