There doesn't seem to be much coverage of Folk Music in the Music section so I thought I'd create this thread for lovers of that genre. Please post about anything you like in that genre or comments about the postings.

Thanks Rubytops. I'd not heard 'Old Fashioned Waltz' before. It's good to discover a new one. I've loved 'I'm a Dreamer' since I first heard it and Tam Lin is one of my husband's favourites. It's a long song but he knows all the words.

I know all the lyrics too. When I was married our first cat was called Tamlyn.

Tomorrow will be the 56th anniversary of the loss of USS Thresher (SSN-593), the first U.S. nuclear submarine to be lost in the Cold War. This is a song about her loss by the Kingston Trio:

The city in which I live stages a three-day Folk Festival every July, and people come from all over the world. I've been privileged to hear folk mysuc not only from Europe and North America, but from Africa, Asia, South America, Australia - you name it. Over fifty years of fun in the sun, good food, good music.
:Some of my favourite memories of Folkfests past:
Discovering the catchy rhythms of Zaydeco music
Hearing Inuk singer Susan Aglukark for the first time
Singing along with Ar Log, the Welsh group
Enjoying the gospel song renditions of Sweet Honey in the Rock
Being mesmerized by the superb harmonies of the Blind Boys of Alabama
So much more!

I was young in the '50s and '60s, and a committed fan of people like Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Mimi and Richard Farina, Peter, Paul, and Mary, the Kingston Trio, Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell, Gordon Lightfoot, Murray McLaughlin, Judy Collins, Bim, Valdy, Nana Mouskouri, Harry Belafonte, et al.

Thanks for this thread, Mixamatosis. Brought back many great memories.

I wonder if it isn't some allegory about the American Civil War.
