Horse Breeds
yes. By breeding a jack (a male donkey) to a mare (a female horse), you get a mule. By breeding a jack to a gaited mare, such as a Saddlebred or a Walking Horse, you can get a gaited mule. Such mules are rising in popularity due to the smoothness of the gaits, and the hardiness and stamina of the mule.
My information came of breed sites, and www.gaitedhorses.net and www.thegaitedhorse.com
Narragansett Pacer. The Narragansett Pacer is responsible for the development of many gaited horse breeds, including the Tennessee Walking Horse, the American Saddlebred, the Morgan and the Standardbred. It was a small breed, barely reaching 14.2 hands, and from reports, not a good looking horse.
The Florida Cracker Horse can also be gaited, but it isn't extinct. There is no such thing as the American Pacer nor the Narragansett Racker.
While it's usually not of horse-height (14.2 hands), this horse is a Nordic breed, said to be the same breed ridden by the Vikings. What breed is this? | Gaited Horse Breeds
|
Icelandic Horse. The Icelandic Horse is an average of 13.2 hands, but it has one of the most unusual horse gaits-the tolt. The tolt is a four beat, lateral gait that always has one foot on the ground. It's said to be similar to the running walk of the Tennessee Walking Horse. With the flying pace, the Icelandic Horse can reach speeds of 30 miles per hour.
American Curly Horse. The American Curly Horse (known as "Curlies") are sometimes gaited. Though they are generally thought of as a coat type, much like the palomino, there is a registry for them. They are primarily gaited when crossed to breeds such as the Missouri Foxtrotter, the Tennessee Walking Horse and Paso Finos. They are known as "Curlies" because of the condition of their coats, which is "soft, fine body hair that is longer and curlier in the winter than in the summer. Depending on the degree of curliness, horses may shed some hair or none at all. Their manes often have ringlets or tendrils, and split down the middle, parting to both sides. Coat textures among Curlies vary, from the tight curls of a micro pin Curly, to the crushed velvet types, to the gentle wavy coats of some minimally expressed Curlies."
The Russian Curly Horse isn't real, and the Russian Bashkir doesn't have the curly coat. The American Sporthorse isn't a gaited breed, nor does it have a curly coat.
Information from http://www.thegaitedhorse.com/curlies.htm
This horse can either be three or five gaited. When crossed with the Arabian, the result is a breed called the "National Show Horse." Which breed is this? | Gaited Horse Breeds

American Saddlebred. If you go to a Saddlebred show, you'll find the announcer calling for the specific gaits, called the rack, the foxtrot, the running walk and the slow pace. At the show I went to, when the announcer called for the rack, he called out "Ladies and gentlemen, time to go for the doctor!" The horses raced around the arena in the rack.
The American Saddlebred is also a known western horse, and several famous horses were saddlebreds. One famous Saddlebred was Robert E Lee's horse Traveller.
This horse has a gait called the running walk, which is similar to the walk of other horse breeds. The running walk, though, can get up to speeds of 10 miles an hour. Which breed is this? | Gaited Horse Breeds

Tennessee Walking Horse. The TWH is a gaited breed known for its "rocking chair" canter, which is a collected gallop. While doing the running walk, the TWH can quickly outdistance many other horses without spending much energy.
The TWH can come in many colors, both solid and paint. It can also range from 14.2 to 17 hands.

This horse breed does not have a registry or a member association. It does have frontal bosses, or "horns." Which breed is it? | Rare Horse Breeds
|
Moyle. The Moyle was developed in Idaho, by a rancher who traded one of his horses for a Mormon's horse, who had galloped for 28 miles for the Pony Express. The mare was in foal, and gave birth a month later to a filly. This line of horses is recognizable due to the appearance of the frontal bosses above their eyes. There are only two other horse breeds in the world known for having frontal bosses, a strain of Andalusians, and the Datong of China.
The Moyle is a hard-working ranch horse. On the Moyle ranch, most cowboys ride only one horse, instead of a string of horses that most ranches have for their cowboys. Another characteristic is that most Moyles do not have chestnuts (the growth on the inside of the front legs.)
Mangalarga Marchador. The Mangalarga Marchador is the national horse in Brazil, and is the most popular horse in the county. While it was developed in Brazil, it can trace its lineage back to Portugal. The unusual name comes from the hacienda Mangalarga, which was one of the first haciendas to promote the Mangalarga Marchador. The second part of the name comes from the the gait that the breed has, a smooth, rhythmic gait that's natural to the breed. The marcha comes in two forms, the marcha batida or the marcha picada. The picada is a bit smoother than the batida. In both gaits, there are times when three legs support the body, which accounts for the smoothness of both gaits.
The Mangalarga Marchador can come in many colors, but bays, grays and chestnuts are the most popular.
Hungary. As its name suggests, the Hungarian Horse originated in Hungary, with the bloodlines going back several centuries. It's good at many events, including jumping, eventing, dressage and driving. They can be any solid color.
Sometimes, a Hungarian Horse will be born with a slate-blue mark in the shape of a three-leaf clover on its muzzle. Such a horse is said to bring the gift of good fortune for the family, and the family would be safe from danger. If a Clover horse was stolen, it would find its way back to the true owner. There is at least one Clover horse alive today (as of 2007), a filly named "Magyar Velvet," the first to be born in 50 years.
This French horse is one of several breeds used by Louis XIV in his armies, and Napoleon for his campaign of Russia. Which breed is it? | Rare Horse Breeds

Comtois. The Comtois is a light draft horse. It's one of the older breeds, thought to originate from horses brought into France by the Burgundians around the 4th century. In the 16th century, the Comtois was used to improve the horses of Burgundy, and was used as a cavalry and artillery horse.
The Comtois is a short draft horse, averaging around 14.3 hands. Its color is any variation of the chestnut, with a flaxen mane and tail.

Mongolian Wild Horse. The Przewalski horse was actually extinct in the wild until the mid 1990's. The Przewalski Foundation and breeding preserves in the Ukraine were responsible for reintroducing the animals into the wild. The breed is still rare with most of the horses being found in zoos.

Florida Cracker. The Florida Cracker horse is a naturally gaited horse that's descended from early Spanish horses, including the Barb, the Garrano, the Jennet and some Andalusians.
The American Saddlebred and National Show horse are both either three or five gaited. Those gaits are the rack and the slow gait (along with the normal horse gaits of the walk and trot.) The Tennessee Walking Horse is known for its running walk.
Colorado Rangerbred. While the other three options are named after states, only the Colorado Rangerbred can be spotted. Not all Rangerbred horses are spotted, though. The Rangerbred can be any solid color, but not any paint or pinto colors.
American Saddlebred. The American Saddlebred originated in Kentucky. It is a light riding horse, known for being either five or three gaited. The Narragansett Pacer, Morgan and Canadian Pacers all contributed to the creation of the American Saddlebred.
Curly coat (includes mane and tail). The American Curly Horse is known for its curly mane, tail and coat, and for curls inside its ears. It's also known for the smooth lateral gait (which is also called a shuffling gait.) Curlies, as they are called, range from 14.3-15.2 hands, and the color can range from solid colors, to spots, to paint and pinto colorings.
