Lion. Lions don't howl - they ROAR! They are found mainly in Africa. Lions are the biggest type of cat. The male adult lions have a mane - lots of fluffy hair that goes all around their faces. They are generally very lazy animals - they can spend up to 20 hours a day lying around doing nothing!
Loon. Loons are called divers in the UK. It is Minnesota's state bird, and the nickname of the Canadian one-cent coin, known as a 'loonie'. You can also use the word to describe a crazy person - it's short for 'lunatic' - but it's not a very nice name to call someone!
Loan. You can borrow books from the library, they are said to be 'on loan'. Just remember to give back whatever someone has loaned to you!
Load. The word 'load' can also be used in an expression to mean 'many' - e.g. "I've got loads of apples to eat today."
Woad. The plant's name is Isatis tinctoria. Woad was used by the ancient Egyptians, as a dye for fabrics, and it can be used as a paint as well.
Word. Words in the English language are split up by spaces, but in other languages, such as Latin and Ancient Greek, there were no spaces between words! If a Roman wanted to say that he had a dog, he would write it like this: IHAVEADOG.
Wood. Wood can be used to make many different things, including musical instruments like guitars. It can be painted different colors.
Wolf. Wolves, or gray wolves, are found in wilderness regions across the world. They look like a close relative, the dog. They make howling noises to communicate to the rest of the pack.
