in the Catholic army. Martin and Arnaud both fight in the religious wars for seven years and Martin shares with Arnaud details of the life he left behind in Artigat.
He is not ready to take on the responsibilities of a man.. 'I'm just a boy--betrayed, defiled. All a young man needs is time.' When Martin's uncle and the villagers force him into an early marriage and punish him for his unwillingness to consummate it, Martin seeks to come into his own while fighting in the religious wars.
He wants to inform Bertrande of Martin's death.. Though Arnaud arrives in Artigat with the intention only of telling Bertrande about Martin's death, the villagers mistake Arnaud for Martin and pressure him to stay.
Guillaume. Guillaume tells Martin's uncle that his 'son' is now a Protestant, hoping to win Bertrande's love and force 'Martin' out of town.
Benoit, who was the first to meet Arnaud when he came to Artigat, tells them.. In an effort to save his friend Arnaud after Guillaume tells the villagers of his Protestant faith, Benoit reveals Arnaud's true identity.
Arnaud's hair is a different color than Martin's hair..
Louison. 'Who can say why Louison has such beautiful hair? Can I know who he is if I'm not Martin Guerre?'
Arnaud. After the real Martin Guerre shows up in the courtroom to claim his name, Arnaud takes all of the blame for his actions, saying that Bertrande never knew he was not Martin.
Martin releases him from prison, but Guillaume kills him.. The judge places Arnaud fate in Martin's hands, who decides to let Arnaud go free when he sees the depth of Arnaud's love for Bertrande. However, a jealous Guillaume stabs Arnaud before he can escape, and he dies in Bertrande's arms.

Not a long journey. Sorry if those options weren't very good, I got stuck for alternatives, although she does actually say "Do be quiet, you futile man" a few moments before this quote. The Duchess and Sir John are always bickering with each other, but you can tell they really love each other.
