Scarlet Pimpernel, The
The Comedie Francaise. The show opens as Marguerite is giving her last performance at the Comedie Francaise. She sings the fabulous number 'Storybook' that is reprised during the second act.
'Believe'. 'You are My Home' is now sung during the wedding scene, but was originally written for Marguerite and Armand. 'Only Love' was a solo for Marguerite during the origianl run of the show, and 'She was There' is sung by Percy after he finds out that Marguerite has been the same all along and never betrayed him.
Douglas Sills. Douglas Sills was discovered during a run of try-outs in {California;} Terrence Mann originated the role of Chauvelin.
Christine Andreas. Amy Bodnar played the role during the national {tour;} Rachel York played the role after Christine Andreas left the {show;} and Linda Eder sang some of the songs for Frank Wildhorn before the show began.
to share. This song, often referred to as 'the footbridge song', shows Percy's deep love and relief in discovering that his wife never betrayed him.
Lord Grenville's Ball. Act II opens at a masquerade ball, where Marguerite secretly makes plans to meet with the Pimpernel (not knowing he's her husband) to tell him of Chauvelin's plan to trap him and to beg him to save Armand.
A falcon. Chauvelin's first act solo, 'Falcon In The Dive', expresses his desire to catch the Pimpernel and restore justice to Paris.
The Marquis St. Cyr. Marguerite's betrayal of the Marquis, one of Percy's best friends, is revealed during the wedding scene. Percy, heartbroken at his wife's actions, sings the beautiful 'Prayer' and sends Marguerite to bed alone on their wedding night. It is after this evening that he decides to go to Paris and save other innocent Parisians from the guillotine.
As a prostitute. Marguerite, unsure of the Pimpernel's reply to her plea to save her brother, disguises herself as a prostitute and goes to a Parisian bistro to try to cajole information out of the soldiers and policemen there. She reprises 'Storybook' and is caught by Chauvelin for espionage, and thrown into jail with her brother. Here, she sings 'I'll Forget You', a poignant ballad where she tries to convince herself that she will forget any memories of her husband and that she never really loved him.
David. 'Into the Fire' begins with Percy telling the tale of David and Golliath to try to inspire his men to join him in his crusade to save Parisians from the guillotine.
Sir Percival Blakeney . Sir Percy (Percival) Blakeney is really the Scarlet Pimpernel, though English society, including his wife, thinks him to be an inane fop.
Christine Andreas. Amy Bodnar played Marguerite on the U.S. Tour. Rachel York played Marguerite after the show was revised. Linda Eder appeared as Marguerite on the 'Scarlet Pimpernel' concept album.
Leontine. (In the original Broadway production) She sings 'Storybook' in a French bar while trying to convince the revolutionaries there to give her information about where to find her brother, Armand. Unfortunately, Chauvelin is there. He recognizes her and throws her in prison with her brother. (In the revised version of the show she sings 'Storybook - Reprise')
to uphold the banner of beauty. The Prince of Wales is suspicious about the frequent trips to France Percy and his men have been making. When questioned, they tell him that they have been traveling to France to buy fancy clothing. They describe how men should be stylish and well dressed in the song 'The Creation of Man'. 'La, but someone has to strike a pose and bear the weight of well tailored clothes and that is why the Lord created men!'

Marquis St. Cyr. Evremonde is from Charles Dickens' classic French Revolution novel 'A Tale of Two Cities'. The Comte de Tornay is a nobleman Percy saves in the novel 'The Scarlet Pimpernel'.
'Into the Fire (Reprise)'. 'Falcon in the Dive' is sung by Chauvelin during the first act. 'You Are My Home' is sung by Marguerite and Armand, followed by the 'Believe Reprise' (sung by Percy and Marguerite), and then finally the reprise of 'Into the Fire'.

Frenchies Pimpernel . Percy sings this poem he has written to his friends about the Scarlet Pimpernel to prevent himself from being discovered.
'Storybook'. Marguerite St. Just, a French actress, sings 'Storybook' at her performance at the Comedie Francaise. After the song ends, she announces her engagement to Sir Percy.
Douglas Sills. Douglas Sills originated the role of the Scarlet Pimpernel. Ron Bohmer and Robert Patteri have both played the Pimpernel in other productions of the show. Terrence Mann was the original Chauvelin.
a fig leaf. 'Adam was a gentleman in Eden. Though his body was admired, you have to grant the adding of a fig leaf was inspired!' Percy, in 'The Creation of Man', after the prince asks him to explain why there is nothing in the book of Genesis stating men were created to be stylish.
'Into the Fire'. Percy and his men sing 'Into the Fire' as they leave for France to save lives. Chauvelin sings 'Falcon In the Dive' when he swears to find and capture the Scarlet Pimpernel. He sings 'Where's the Girl?' to Marguerite after she refuses to spy for him and he is wondering what happened to the exciting, passionate girl he once knew. He, Percy, and Marguerite sing 'The Riddle'.
an American. Among other things, they consider that the Pimpernel might be a bishop, a maharajah from Bombay, or even George III.
demned elusive pimpernel. From the song "They Seek Him Here", sung by Percy. The role of Percy was originated by Douglas Sills.
memory. Marguerite originally sings this song about Percy, although Percy later sings a revised version of it about Marguerite.
knife. This song, in which Chauvlin tries to win back Marguerite, has become one of my favorite songs. Some of the lines are truly amazing.
Armand. Armand St. Just was portrayed by Gilles Chiasson in the original Broadway run of the show.
Bounders. The Pimpernel and his Bounders snatched many a innocent victim from the guillotine!
Belgium. "Grappin," really the Pimpernel in disguise, was introduced as "the Belgian spy."
one. Armand only sings one song, "You Are My Home," in a duet with Marguerite.
Marie. Marie Grosholtz painted the scenery for the theatre in which Marguerite used to perform, and later painted a portrait of Sir Percy that was rather "breathtaking!" (in his own words).
