A church mission office. Morgan is bored when the story opens. She looks around the place and wonders if she really makes any difference. Morgan also gets support from her father, but the charity work at the center provides her with something to do.
To reassure herself that she exists. Morgan has begun to feel that her place in life is meaningless. The profusion of mirrors is not, for her, a sign of vanity. Rather, they remind her that she is not fading away.
Most of her dreams. When we meet Terisa, she does not find this condition to be a relief. It adds to her sense that her life is becoming less important in the 'real' world.

He needs her help. The young man is an apprentice craftsman, from the country of Mordant. He says he thought Terisa was a magician, because she owns so many mirrors.
Joyse. The king is in failing health. Many in the country fear that he will not be able to fend off challenges to his power.
Mordant's council of magicians. The Congery oversees the use of mirrors for teleportation, among other functions. It takes years of training and experience in magic in order to become part of this council.
Orison. Much of the first novel in the series is set here. In the sequel, "A Man Rides Through," we see other locales. The word "Orison" means prayer.
