Nix, Garth
As well as being the Abhorsen-in-Waiting, Lirael is also the first Remembrancer in hundreds of years. When she stands in Death and looks into her Dark Mirror, what can she see? | 'The Old Kingdom Trilogy' by Garth Nix
|
the past. "'You will meet many trials on a path that lies unseen, but you will never forget that you are a Daughter of the Clayr. You may not See, but you will Remember. And in the Remembering, you will see the hidden past that holds the secrets of the future.'"
Technology fails. Despite Ancelstierre and the Old Kingdom having a common border, they are nothing alike. Where the Old Kingdom has swords and Charter magic, Ancelstierre has guns and cars. Near the border, where the Border Guard is stationed and Wyverly College is located, Charter magic creeps into the air, especially when the wind blows strongly from the North. The Border Guard has gotten use to this, and although officials in the South don't know it, the soldiers carry Charter spelled swords, some are even mages. And the girls at the College are taught the way of the Charter, though it isn't mentioned on their diplomas.
It has waves. "This was a trick some place. The water was shallow here, only ankle-deep, and somewhat warmer. The light was better too--still gray, but you could see farther out. Even the ubiquitous current was no more than a bit of a trickle around the feet.
But the Third Precinct had waves. For the first time, Sabriel broke into a run, sprinting as fast as she could towards the Third Gate, just visible in the distance."
Sabriel finds Touchstone trapped in the body of a wooden figurehead, his soul anchored in Death. After she rescues his spirit from the chill waters, his body still does not awaken. Mogget tells her she must kiss him to wake him up. Does she? | 'The Old Kingdom Trilogy' by Garth Nix
|
No. "'A kiss,' said Mogget sleepily. 'Actually, just a breath would do. But you have to start kissing someone sometime, I suppose.'
'A breath?' she asked. She didn't want to kiss just any wooden man. He looked nice enough, but be might not be like his looks. A kiss seemed very forward. He might remember it and make assumptions."
'Like this?' She took a deep breath, leaned forward, exhaled a few inches from his nose and mouth, then stepped back to see what would happen--if anything."
russet bear, barking owl and ice-otter. Lirael uses the ice-otter to get into tiny spaces, the barking owl to fly and the russet bear for its strength. The skins do have their disadvantages, the biggest one being the amount of time it takes to prepare one - five hours or more for Lirael to make them, another hour to fold it properly and at least a half an hour to put each one on.
Still cool though, eh?
f. Sam is able to create a new sword to defeat the Destroyer using Lirael's sword Nehima, the panpipes and the blood of the seven Charters because he has the insight and magic of the Wallmakers on his side.
"'Use magic!' shrieked Lirael, and she shook him, hard. 'You're a Wallmaker, Sam! Hurry!" -'Abhorsen'
In a bathtub on the Ratterlin. "'That looks like a metal bathtub," she [Lirael] said slowly. 'With a man in it.'
'It is a bathtub,' said the Dog. 'And a man. There's something else too ... you'd best nock an arrow, Mistress.'
'He looks unconscious. Or dead,' replied Lirael.
She was Sabriel's great-great-great-great-grandmother's cousin. "The Abhorsen who made it [the paperwing] had labored long, and with love, to create something that was more like a magical bird than an aircraft....
'The Abhorsen who made this,' Sabriel asked. 'Who was she? I mean, in relation to me?'
'A cousin,' purred Mogget, close to her ear. 'Your great-great-great-great-grandmother's cousin. The last of that line. She had no children.'
Maybe the Paperwing was her child, Sabriel thought, running her hand along the sleek surface of the fuselage, feeling the Charter marks quiescent in the fabric." -'Sabriel' by Garth Nix
Our Country. The movement got its name with slogans like 'Foreigners out! It's Our Country', as their goal is to send the Southerling refugees out of Ancelstierre and into the Old Kingdom. This is what King Touchstone and the Abhorsen Sabriel know must not happen, and so they go to Corvere to try to prevent it.
"The Clayr Saw me, the Wallmakers made me, my enemies Remember me.". "Lirael drew her sword, noting the play of Charter marks along its silvered blade. There was an inscription, too, she saw. She held the blade to the light and read it aloud. 'The Clayr Saw me, the Wallmakers made me, my enemies Remember me.'
'A sister sword to Binder,' remarked the Dog... 'I didn't know they had one.'
Lirael twisted the blade to see if there was something written on the other side, but as she did so, the first inscription changed, the letters shimmering into a new arrangement. 'Nehima' read Lirael. 'What does that mean?'
Its a name.' said the Dog blandly. 'I suppose you could say it means 'forget-me-not.' Though the irony is that Nehima herself is long forgotten.'"
-'Lirael' by Garth Nix
In honor of her childhood friend who died helping Sabriel defeat Kerrigor.. Ellimere is the daughter of King Touchstone and the Abhorsen Sabriel, sister of Sameth. She is the one that will reign as Queen when it is her time.
I thought it was kind of a shame that we never really got to know Ellimere; she is said to be fierce and strong, like both her mother and father, but she was not a truly significant character in the novels, so she still remains a mystery. Maybe Garth Nix will write a book about her....hint hint....
Sabriel to Colonel Horyse. Sabriel says this to the Colonel when he tells her she has chosen a difficult path, at the very beginning of 'Sabriel':
"'Does the Walker choose the Path or the Path the Walker?' Sabriel quoted, the words, redolent with echoes of Charter Magic, twining around her tongue like some lingering spice. Those words were the dedication in the front of her almanac. They were also the very last words, all alone on the last page, of 'The Book of the Dead.'" -'Sabriel' by Garth Nix
t. She was a necromancer Sabriel fought and has now returned, more determined than ever, carrying her sword of flames, her bronze mask on her face.
His body is in a sarcophagus in Ancelstierre.. Kerrigor was actually Touchstone's brother those hundreds of years ago when the Old Kingdom was a safe place to live. Kerrigor killed Touchstone's mother and sister and was only able to trick them because Touchstone still trusted him. Touchstone feels he is responsible, though he had no way of knowing and was almost killed too.
It unlocks the locked doors Lirael is allowed to enter.. It took Lirael three months to open four more spells on her key-like braclet, since her supervisor Vancelle only unlocked one. All this freedom, of course, leads to her adventures in the underground of the Great Library.
a metal bottle. In all her wanderings in the Great Library, Lirael manages to release a dangerous Free Magic creature, called a Stilken. She bears the responsibilty of what she's done and so takes it upon herself to bind it again, researching in books with only the Dog to help (and sometimes hinder) her in this duty. At the dead of night she borrows the sword Binder and takes all her supplies down into the deep to sucessfully bind the tainted being.
Aline. Aline sang this rhyme to Sabriel:
Five Great Charters knit the land
Together linked, hand in hand
One in the people who wear the crown
Two in the folk who keep the Dead down
Three and Five become stone and mortar
Four sees all in frozen water.
Garth Nix is a genius, ne?
The Ratterlin . The Ratterlin is a great, powerful river that starts at the Clayr's Glacier and will stop most of the Dead.
No. Royal blood, blood of the Clayr, or blood of the Abhorsen are needed to break a Great Charter Stone.
Binder. Lirael sneaks into the Chief Librarian's room and secretly borrows Binder. The Dog returns it to the Chief Librarian's room before she wakes up.
Lirael. Lirael is Sam's half aunt, and half sister to Sabriel.
Astarael. The seven bells are Ranna (Sleeper), Mosrael (Waker), Kibeth (Walker), Dyrim (Speaker), Belgaer (Thinker), Saraneth (Binder), and Astarael, sometimes called the Sorrowful (Weeper).
A Stilken. Lirael accidentally lets the Stilken free when she steps through the glass floor in the room; she also finds the dog soapstone statuette.
The future. The Clayr have the ability to see the many possible furtures, called the Sight.
200 years. Touchstone was imprisoned during the attack on the Queen and her daughters. Sabriel finds him in Holehallow, his body trapped as a wooden figurehead and his spirit trapped in Death.
Kerrigor. The Disreputable Dog and the Chlorr of the Mask don't appear until the next book, "Lirael".
Abhorsen. The Abhorsen's job is to keep the dead from coming back to Life. The relative who is to become the next Abhorsen is called the Abhorsen-in-Waiting.
9. There are 9 gates in all, and passing the ninth is the final death.
The Old Kingdom. Modern technology does not work in the The Old Kingdom, and often does not work near the Wall either.
Wyverley College. Sabriel started attending Wyverley when she was five years old.
Nicholas. Nicholas Sayre originated in Ancelstierre, and did not believe in magic till the end of Abhorsen. He is described as handsome, and almost gets killed when the shard of Orannis enters his heart. When the hemispheres are joined, the shard of metal had worked itself out enough not to puncture a hole through his heart, causing death. We can't have someone Lirael likes (loves?) getting killed, can we?
