And I have lost the immortal part of myself, and what remains is bestial. My reputation, Iago, my reputation!' And then Iago rightly responds, '...Reputation is an idle and most false imposition...' Hm, does anyone see the irony?
Emilia. Emilia remains faithful to his husband until the very last moment, until she realizes that her husband was responsible for the death of her beloved lady. She confesses all.
Honest. This is the irony in the play, as the audience knows that he has been the most deceitful character in the whole play! And yet, Othello, Desdemona, Cassio, Montano, and Roderigo all consider him honest!
Magic, spells, and enchantments cast by Othello.. The exact quote is thus, '...She is abused,stol'n from me, and corrupted by spells and medicines bought of mountebanks...' Later on, we learn Brabantio dies, but of grief? We are not yet sure...
They have all drowned.. Although the Turkish fleet was defeated, it was the storm that did them in. It would be inaccurate to say they have been defeated, there was no battle fought, even though that was the intention.
Name given to one of Northwestern African descent.. The fact that Othello was of color is reiterated throughout the story. Phrases such as, 'an old black ram is tupping your white ewe' and 'O, the more angel she. And you the blacker devil!' give reference to the fact that Othello is dark-skinned. It is also interesting to note that before Sydney Poitier and other early African actors, the part of Othello was often played by a white actor.
