Landon. The book takes place in Beaufort, North Carolina. The year is 1998 and Landon is looking back on his 17th year back in 1958.

1. Theresa finds a bottle with a note in it at the beach during a vacation. Then, when she takes it to her editor, the editor suggests that she publish it in their paper. After she does, she gets numerous calls, letters, and emails all about the letter. Then a reader sends her a copy of a letter that she found. While Theresa is looking through a magazine, she comes across another letter and tracks it down. However, at the end of the book, Theresa recieves a letter from Garrett telling her that he loves her and that he is taking his boat out to send a final letter to Catherine.
"Happenstance". Garrett took the boat out sailing after a fight with Theresa and never returned. They held a ceremony for him. Theresa was greif stricken.

Kevin Costner. Paul Newman played Garrett's father, John Savage played Johnny Land and Jesse James played Jason Osborne.
Richard Franklin. Robert Bonham killed Richard Franklin for his identity. He was known as Richard throughout most of the book.
Three. Henry and Emma had three kids. They were mentioned on the boat.
Jessica. Richard gave his ex-wife's locket to Julie. He told her he had it engraved with her initials. However, her initials were the same as Jessica's.
Richard and Singer. Richard shot Singer as Singer was attacking him. Richard was then shot by the police. Both died from the wounds.
Topsail. It's about 40 minutes south of Swansboro. Mike and Julie went there to stay for safety purposes while she was being stalked by Richard. Of course, Richard followed them there.
Great Dane. Julie received the Great Dane right after her husband's death. She named him Singer.

Alvin. Alvin is his best friend who later betrays him by sending him e-mails trying to convince him not to marry Lexie. Jed is the local Boone Creek taxidermist who scares Jeremy, Doris is Lexie's grandmother, and Rodney is an old friend of Lexie's who still loves her, even though she is engaged to marry Jeremy.

Amniotic band syndrome (ABS). An amniotic band developes inside Lexie's stomach. If it attached to the baby or to the umbilical cord, the baby could have serious birth defects (ABS) or even die. Luckily, it didn't attach, and the baby was born healthy.
Boone Creek. They live in Boone Creek, North Carolina. Jeremy moves down there from New York City after he and Lexie are married.
Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. They get married on the beach at the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, which is where Lexie's parents were married.

Jeremy tells Claire that the lights are her mother (Lexie), who wanted to see her. That is what Doris told Lexie when she took her to the cemetery as a little girl (Lexie's parents were dead).
