Victor has to die. Victor and Emily's marriage is invalid because they are only married until death do them part. Since Emily is already dead, Elder Gutknecht, voiced by Michael Gough, tells her they aren't married. According to Elder Gutknecht, the wise old man from the dead world, the only way Victor and Emily's marriage can be valid is if Victor drinks the poison to make his heart stop. Victor overhears them talking about this, and tells Emily he would die. Emily tells Elder Gutknecht that she could never ask Victor to do such a thing.
Lord Barkis. Lord Barkis Bittern, voiced by Richard E. Grant, is the villain of the film. He is the Corpse Bride's fiance who ends up murdering her on their way to elope. He is a greedy, cocky man who marries Victoria for her money, only to find out her family is broke. Lord Barkis gets what he deserves at the end of the film though, when he drinks poison.
The Everglots (Victoria's parents). The Everglots are broke, however, and see that the marriage must occur in order to stay off the streets.
