Death Becomes Her
When we are first introducted to Madeline Ashton (played by Meryl Streep), what is she doing? | Death Becomes Her
|
Performing in a Broadway musical. The show was called 'Songbird' and was a musical version of the Tennessee Williams play 'Sweet Bird of Youth'. It was not very well received, with the majority of the audience leaving before the finale.
Madeline did star in a thriller that a bitter Helen watches repeatedly years later, in which Madeline's character is garrotted. The movie appears to be called "Dark Window" as shown on a poster littering the wall of Helen's apartment.
Helen Sharp, played by Goldie Hawn, was a struggling writer for many years. A book on what subject eventually propelled her to stardom? | Death Becomes Her

Beauty secrets. People attending the opening of the book were amazed to find out that she was fifty years old. Later, of course, we discover this is due to the effects of the potion of immortality.
Dr. Ernest Menville (played by Bruce Willis) began his career as a plastic surgeon of some renown. After years of marriage to Madeline, what does he eventually become? | Death Becomes Her
|
Undertaker. Helen tells Ernest that it is the years of marriage to a cruel Madeline that resulted in Ernest losing his talents as a plastic surgeon. Madeline referred to Ernest as "Ghoul!" and, in one hateful tirade, describes him as being as dead below the waste as his clients.
His secret was spray paint - mannequin paint to be exact - to give his 'clients' a lifelike appearance; understandably some family members weren't too thrilled to hear this.
He later confesses to Helen that he would give anything to be able to operate again.
Lisle Von Rhuman (played by Isabella Rossellini), the leader of the immortals, is fond of saying what phrase upon her clients drinking the potion of immortality? | Death Becomes Her
|
Siempre Viva!. It is Spanish for 'Live Forever.' She says this to her many clients because, after taking the potion, they will be attached to their bodies for a very, very long time.
71 years old. She described those who had taken the potion of immortality as "creatures of the spring", not having seen an autumn or winter in years.
When asked to guess Lisle's age, Madeline ventured "38? 28...23"?
Lisle was not impressed as she believed herself to look considerably younger than Madeline's first guess.
Why do Madeline and Helen urge Ernest to take the potion of immortality too? | Death Becomes Her
|
So that Ernest could perform maintainence on Madeline and Helen forever. After the spray paint Ernest applied to their dead bodies starts to peel, Madeline and Helen concoct a scheme to keep him alive forever, to do touchups, anytime the paint covering their bodies failed.
Madeline and Helen did beg Ernest to drink the potion so that he would not die after falling from Lisle's rooftop, but not because they cared about him, only so he would be able to take care of their crumbling bodies.
He moves on with his life, dying 37 years later.. After 50, Ernest meets his wife, has two sons and four daughters, goes on to become a brilliant academic and rugged outdoorsman and opens the Meville Marriage Conuselling Clinic, the Menville Center for the Study of Woman, and a chapter of Alcoholics Anonymous. He often tells his friends and family 'tall tales' about the living dead in Beverly Hills.
The minister at the funeral says he has, in his own way, learned the secret of eternal life, living on in the memories of those left behind.
Madeline is not impressed, retorting "Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah."
Ernest does fall from the roof of Lisle's castle but, fortunately for him, falls into the castle's indoor swimming pool.
They fall to pieces.. After leaving Ernest's funeral, Helen slips on a can of spray paint that Madeline had accidentally dropped on the top of a staircase, on the way into the church. Just before falling, Helen manages to grab a bemused Madeline and as they hit the bottom of the stairs, they break into pieces.
As their disembodied heads finally come to a rest, Helen asks sarcastically if Madeline remembers where they'd parked their car.
Newark. When Helen is talking to Ernest during her book party, she reassures Ernest that it was Madeline's fault that they broke up. Helen says, "She's a woman. A woman Ernest. From Newark, God's sakes". Madeline overhears all of this and realises Helen isn't as nice and soft as she used to be.
Madeline tries everything to make herself look younger. What does she say does nothing for her anymore? | Death Becomes Her
|
Make up. Anna, the woman working on Madeline's face at a high-class doctor's surgery, says that she could do Madeline's make up herself because she couldn't do anymore surgery on Madeline. Madeline explodes, saying make up doesn't work anymore. She tells Anna that she has no idea what it's like because Anna has 22 year-old skin.
Madeline has had several affairs during her marriage. What is her current boyfriend's name? | Death Becomes Her
|
Dakota. Madeline is in a relationship with Dakota, a man many years her junior. But when she discovers that he is cheating on her with a young woman, Madeline gets very upset. Dakota tells her to find someone her own age because they look ridiculous together.
When Madeline returns home after becoming young, she changes out of her wet clothes into a black body suit. She then grabs a sheer robe to go over it. What colour is the robe? | Death Becomes Her
|
Pink. I think this a beautiful outfit that looks spectacular on Meryl. She is about to leave the house again when she and Ernest get into a fight and she falls down the stairs.
Madeline goes to see a doctor about her broken neck. When the doctor tells her that her heart isn't beating, and that her temperature is below 80, she passes out. Where does she wake up? | Death Becomes Her
|
in the morgue. Ernest tries to find a doctor for his wife after she passes out, but when he returns to the room, he finds it empty. He asks the nurse where Madeline is, and she tells him Madeline was taken to the morgue. Upon hearing this he yells, "The morgue! She'll be furious!". I think that would have to be one of my favorite lines in the whole movie.
her index finger. Helen is angry that Madeline lost a can of spray paint. She says Madeline is always losing things. Madeline asks Helen to tell her something she has lost before. Helen reminds her of the time she lost her index finger. Madeline says that she didn't lose her index finger, it broke off. Luckily she found it and reattached it. I thought this part was also very funny.
