Interesting Questions, Facts, and Information
Donnie Darko .
The opening shot takes place on a hillside. The camera moves up the road to find Donnie (Jake Gyllenhaal) lying on the street. He wakes up, stands to look at the view, turns and does something before stepping off-camera. What does he do? | 'Donnie Darko' Nitty-Gritty I

smiles. This is a beautiful opening shot. According to the commentary track, Jake had some difficulty finding motivation for that reaction until the director reminded him that he had just awoken on a mountain road.
Halloween. It's the Middlesex Halloween Festival.
Frank. Frank's red car passes Donnie in the street.
blowing leaves. Then when Elizabeth comes out to ask him something, he turns the leaf-blower on her.
Stephen King's 'IT'. Later, in bed, Eddie is reading 'The Tommyknockers', but it's hardcover and someone on set stole the dust jacket, so you can't tell.
Where is Donnie?. Apparently, McDonnell actually wrote that message herself. Nothing like an actor with good penmanship...
Dukakis. This was 1988, remember. From that first dinner scene, the Darko family is set up as a group in which friendly debate and disagreement can exist in a healthy way.
The Yarn Barn. At dinner, Donnie asks if she'll still be working there when she has a kid.
8th. Then the dinner conversation turns sour.
toilet papered the Johnson's house. He says that he 'stopped rolling houses in the sixth grade'.
Old Spice. There's also some Secret deodorant. Must be a shared bathroom.
political debate. Some sort of debate between Dukakis and Bush. This also sets up the sleep disorders suffered by multiple members of the family (insomnia, sleepwalking).
pen. He uses the pen to write on his arm the time until things fall apart and the world 'ends'.
Samantha. Samantha was sort of marginal in the film. Elizabeth is cowering at the front door. Eddie and Rose are both awoken, Eddie in front of the TV, Rose in their bed.
Holiday Inn. It looks like one of those lonely airport hotels.
smokes a cigarette. His friends tell him he should, now that he's famous for escaping the jet engine's path.
To keep his sister quite about the 'bad' thing he does at the bus stop, Donnie threatens to put something in the garbage disposal if she tells. What is it? | 'Donnie Darko' Nitty-Gritty II

Ariel. Samantha already knew the threat, making this sort of exchange seem habitual.
back to China. One of the early examples of how kids can be cruel to one another.
Jim's book. She's in the hallway and the bully Seth sneers at her, prompting the camera to swing around and give us our first glimpse of her.
Graham Greene's 'The Destructors'. The story becomes an issue for the school later.
Next to the boy she thinks is the cutest.. Seems a bit cruel to me. Not the best way to introduce a young girl to a socially vicious group of teens.
In Joanie's seat.. Which is more or less next to Donnie Darko. From Miss Pomeroy's look, I have to wonder if he's the guy she thinks is the cutest, too.
I'm not afraid anymore!. The whole thing was about controlling fear and allowing love to be a dominant force in life.
Axe through the head.. The school officials were amazed because the statue was solid bronze.
baby mice. Not exactly accurate, but it made for a very funny moment.
burned down a house. He got held back in school because of it, and now he can't drive until he's 21.
antiseptics. Gretchen didn't seem overly impressed by the explanation Donnie gave for this.
Christina Applegate from 'Married with Children'. Apparently they wanted to use Alyssa Milano but couldn't afford the rights. Christina Applegate must have been more generous (perhaps because she has less of a career now?).
button fly. It's clearest when he's doing them up again. The therapist had to cut the hypnosis session short because it was becoming inappropriate very quickly.
shooting glass bottles. He has very good aim, which pays off later when he shoots Frank in the eye.
check the mail. She never gets any, though, until Donnie writes her after reading her book.
