Interesting Questions, Facts, and Information
Magnolia
1877-TAME-HER. You can see it in the commercial at the beginning of the film.
Jack Partridge. Mackey is the name of his mother, and Frank the name of his grandfather.
$31,90. Playboy, Penthouse, Hustler, white bread, water and some peanut butter and cigarettes.
"Now that I've met you, would you object to never seeing each other again?" This a quote from the movie, but also the opening line of a song by Aimee Mann, which song? | Wise Up - The "Magnolia" Quiz
|
Deathly. In fact, Claudia says: "...never seeing me again." But I'm sure you got the right answer anyway.
The Golden Bear (Berlin). In 2000 "Magnolia" was awarded the Golden Bear as best movie.
Paul Thomas Anderson. PTA also wrote and directed "Sydney" a.k.a. "Hard Eight" (1996), "Boogie Nights" (1997) and "Punch-Drunk Love" (2002). Paul W. S. Anderson directed films like "Mortal Combat" (1995), "Event Horizon" (1997" and "Resident Evil" (2002). Wes Anderson, however, wrote and directed "Rushmore" (1998) and "The Royal Tenenbaums" (2001). According to PTA, Robert Altman's "Short Cuts" (1993) influenced the making of "Magnolia".
Tom Cruise. Tom Cruise was awarded a Golden Globe (Best Supporting Actor) for his role. Reynolds appears in "Boogie Nights", Jackson plays a smaller role in "Sydney" - and Bob De Niro is just a fine actor!
William H. Macy. Bill Macy also stars in "Boogie Nights". He received an Academy Award for "Fargo" in 1996 - which also starred Steve Buscemi. Wahlberg plays porn star Dirk Diggler in "Boogie Nights". Jared Leto acted in modern classics like "Fight Club" and "Requiem for a Dream".
Aimee Mann. Aimee wrote some songs for the film exclusively, some were chosen from previous records. Fiona is PTA's girlfriend, Michael Penn is Aimee's husband - both are singers/songwriters, too. Supertramp contributed "Goodbye Stranger" and "Logical Song" to "Magnolia".
He's killed by a shotgun.. Actually, Sydney attempts to commit suicide by jumping - but he is killed by a shotgun his own mother accidentally fires.
How to "Seduce & Destroy" women.. "Seduce & Destroy" is the title of Mackey's seminar. "How to Make an American Quilt" (1995) and "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days" (2003) are movies...
Jim Kurring. A frog falls onto his car's rooftop after he's spotted Donnie breaking into Solomon & Solomon.
What Do Kids Know?. Jimmy Gator (played by great veteran actor Philip Baker Hall) is the show master of "WDKK?".
San Fernando Valley, L.A.. PTA's "Boogie Nights" and the majority of "Punch-Drunk Love" also take place in the director's home area!
One of my favorite musicians of all time, Aimee Mann, wrote and performed most of the songs heard throughout this film. Claudia Wilson Gator (Melora Walters) meets LAPD Officer Jim Kurring (John C. Reilly) only because she is playing an Aimee Mann song at a remarkably high volume level. Which song is she playing that causes her neighbors to call the police and complain? | "Magnolia" Quiz: Beware of Falling Frogs!
|
Momentum. All of these songs are heard throughout the course of the film, but when Kurring arrives at Claudia's apartment, it's "Momentum" that's blasting out of her speakers.
Quiz Kid Donny Smith (William H. Macy). Donny, about halfway through the film, confesses his love for Brad, a male bartender. As far as we know, none of the other characters mentioned in this question are homosexuals.
2 . Big Earl Partridge (Jason Robards) has both brain and lung cancer. Jimmy Gator (Phillip Baker Hall) has bone cancer. That's two. (Frank T.J. Mackey's mother died of cancer over ten years prior to the events of this film, but since we never see her in the film, she's certainly not a "major character.")
Frank T.J. Mackey (Tom Cruise), the mastermind of "Seduce and Destroy," uses an alias -- he is actually the son of television producer Earl Partridge (Jason Robards). What is "Frank's" real first name? | "Magnolia" Quiz: Beware of Falling Frogs!
|
Jack. Earl tells his nurse, Phil Parma, that his son's name is Jack, and that Jack is better known as infomercial celebrity Frank T.J. Mackey.
A two-digit number appears MANY times throughout the film, in both obvious and subtle places. This number is a reference to a particular passage from the Book of Exodus in the Holy Bible. What is this two-digit number? | "Magnolia" Quiz: Beware of Falling Frogs!
|
82 . I'm no Bible expert, but my understanding is that Exodus 8:2 refers to the plague of frogs that was unleashed upon Egypt. Fitting, given the bizarre climax of this film.
In the conversation that Linda Partridge has with her lawyer. Jim Kurring's voice mail message encourages women to leave him a message at box number 82. An audience member in the stands during the taping of "What Do Kids Know?" is, inexplicably, holding up a cardboard sign reading "Exodus 8:2." And, in the prologue, when Sydney Barringer is standing on the ledge, some coiled cabling off to his left is looped into the shape of the number 82. (Check if you don't believe me!) At no time does Linda or her lawyer (played by Michael Murphy) mention the number 82.
f. Nope. Kind of looks like PTA, but that floor director -- the guy in the baseball cap who "counts down" the seconds to air time with broad hand gestures -- is actually played by Clark Gregg, who also appeared in the film "State and Main".
Earl Partridge owns an unusually large number of pets, all a specific type of animal. Multiple representatives of what species of animal can be seen in the Partridge home? | "Magnolia" Quiz: Beware of Falling Frogs!
|
dogs. There are at least four dogs in the Partridge home.
Once Phil Parma learns that Frank T.J. Mackey, the infomercial sex guru, is actually Earl Partridge's son, he gets the idea to look for Mackey's ads in adult magazines, and orders said material from the local grocery store. Which magazine DOES he order over the phone in order to aid his investigation? | "Magnolia" Quiz: Beware of Falling Frogs!
|
Hustler. Phil seems surprised to learn that the local grocery delivery service supplies "Hustler" magazine upon request. (He also orders up an issue of "Playboy.")
Quiz Kid Donny Smith. Both Avi Solomon (Al Molina) -- Donny's boss -- and a guy at the bar where Donny drowns his sorrows point out that Donny has been struck by lightning...more than once! Ouch.
The guests of Frank T.J. Mackey's "Seduce and Destroy" seminar are provided lunch along with a day's worth of instruction on procuring women. According to Mackey's dialogue, what food item was at least part of the lunch provided? | "Magnolia" Quiz: Beware of Falling Frogs!
|
nachos. When Mackey returns to the stage after the lunch break, he rhetorically asks the audience, "How were those nachos?"
Wise Up. Even Earl Partridge, on the verge of death -- and Linda Partridge, half into her overdose -- sing along!
Phil Parma. Linda had planned to give her husband the lethal dose of morphine, but found herself unable to do so. It was Phil who squeezed the dropper into Earl's mouth, well before "Frank" even arrived at Earl's house.
Claudia Wilson Gator. Claudia is shown using cocaine multiple times throughout the film. None of the other characters listed are shown using cocaine at all.
Late in the film, a plague of frogs rains down upon Los Angeles, causing extreme havoc and panic for most of the characters in the film. Which character's life was actually SAVED by the plague of frogs? | "Magnolia" Quiz: Beware of Falling Frogs!
|
Jimmy Gator. Jimmy was about to shoot himself in the head, but a frog crashed through his skylight and struck his hand, spoiling the shot. None of the other characters mentioned were in life-threatening situations when the frogs began to fall.
