In this quiz there will be one question about each track plus a few extras. Enjoy!
Track One: On "One Angry Dwarf...", what does Ben say at the conclusion of the track?
| Ben Folds Five- Whatever And Ever... Amen
|
I Like That One!. At the end of the track, everything goes quiet and the listener expects the next rack only to hear Ben crack this line in a carefree way that sets the tone for the rest of the album.
Bass. The drums is the first instrument to drop out and then the piano takes a solo. After a while, the piano fades to nothing and the bass finishes the song by itself a few bars later.
Abortion. There was a lot of speculation about this song. It was always assumed that it was about abortion and was finally confirmed by Ben on his "Ben Folds Live" CD where he reveals the meaning of the song to his audience.
Bought Her Dinner. The song was written in about an hour at a rehearsal after Darren Jesse (the drummer) had just been dumped by his girlfriend. The lyrics in the question are found in the second verse.
Four. There are two violins, one viola and one cello!
Four. The chorus concludes "I wanna be Kate (riff) Kate (riff) Kate (riff) Kate (riff) before going on to the next part of the song.
Melodica. The melodica is an instrument like a recorder except you push keys as if it were a piano. It works similarly to a wind instrument as you have to blow air into it to make it play.
Fred Jones. This is a piano solo with a few vocals. Fred Jones makes his second appearance on Ben's "Rockin' The Suburbs" album in Fred Jones Part 2.
A Phone Ringing In The Background. My friend alerted me to this one. You need to listen very carefully. It happens just before Ben sings the final "...last night in... town!" The phone rings then Darren laughs. The album was recorded at Ben's house and apparently someone forgot to unplug the phone for this session. However, because it was such a good take and so funny they decided to leave it in.
The Cure. This is the final line of the third verse before going into the chorus.
The Last Polka. Originally, "Missing The War" was going to be on "Ben Folds Five's" debut album along with "The Last Polka" but was cut before mixing started.
My God! What Have I Done?. This is a very emotional song. It is the perfect ending to one of the best albums of the 1990's!
Ben Folds. Ben is the most prolific writer for the band on all of the albums. Darren writes a few songs and the band's friend, Anna Goldman, writes a song or two with Ben and Darren. Robert does not write many songs and the songs he does write generally do not make the albums.
Song For The Dumped. "Ben Folds Five" was huge in Japan around the time of the "Whatever And Ever... Amen" album (and still are) so they decided to record the song in Japanese and release it as a single in Japan. As you can imagine, it was a huge success.
This question focus' on the hidden track! What happens in the background when Darren tells the listener what Ben Folds is?*
*I can't type what Darren says because it is too offensive for this site in my opinion!
| Ben Folds Five- Whatever And Ever... Amen
|
Laughs And Claps. This was a surprise, even for me! It was a year before I even realised that the hidden track was on the album. Now I look on every album to try and find hidden tracks. Anyway, stay tuned for more "Ben Folds Five" quizzes. Bye!
Years Go Flying By. This lyric is in the first verse of "Jackson Cannery." This explosive first track was the ideal start to Ben Folds Fives' career.
Gershwin- Rhapsody In Blue. Ben takes "Rhapsody In Blue" to a new level in this solo! He plays the theme at a much faster speed than on any previous recording of the piece of music.
