Richard Strauss. Edvard Grieg was the director's first choice, and he was prepared to offer Grieg $25,000 for one concert. Grieg turned it down because he suffered terribly from sea-sickness and would never cross an ocean even for such a "princely" offer. Joachim was the director's second choice. He turned it down because he was 72 years old. "If the good maestro had invited me to come to America 30 years ago, I would have gladly gone. But I am afraid to disappoint the Americans." Richard Strauss wound up dedicating the new symphony hall for a "mere" $6,000.
Kitsee, Hungary. Joseph Joachim was born in 1831 in Kitsee. He died in Berlin in 1907.
