Please Please Me
I'm in love with you.. Written by John Lennon to his wife, Cynthia, the lyrics include the lines:
"Let me whisper in your ear,
Say the words you long to hear,
I'm in love with you".
17. The song, about a boy who sees a girl at a ballroom, was written by Paul McCartney at his family's home in September of 1962.
"Well, she was just 17,
You know what I mean,
And the way she looked was way beyond compare".
Rain. John Lennon's mother used to sing him the 1932 Bing Crosby song "Please" when he was a child, and he liked the sound.
"I don't wanna sound complainin',
But you know there's always rain in my heart (in my heart)".
Bad. Recorded in February of 1963, the song is about two brokenhearted boys.
"I'm the kind of guy,
Who never used to cry,
The world is treatin' me bad... Misery!"
Cry. Inspired by the style of Smokey Robinson, John Lennon wrote this song in 1962.
"Now you're mine, my happiness still makes me cry.
And in time, you'll understand the reason why,
If I cry,
It's not because I'm sad, but you're the only love that I've ever had".
My mind. John Lennon and Paul McCartney got the idea for the title of the song from the "West Side Story" song "There's a Place for Us".
"There is a place,
Where I can go,
When I feel low,
When I feel blue.
And it's my mind,
And there's no time when I'm alone".
Ring. "Anna" was originally written and recorded by R&B singer Arthur Alexander, and recorded by The Beatles in February, 1963.
"Anna,
Just one more thing, girl.
You give back your ring to me, and I will set you free,
Go with him".
Love. The song was written by Gerry Goffin and Carole King.
"Chains, my baby's got me locked up in chains.
And they ain't the kind that you can see.
Whoa, oh, these chains of love got a hold on me, yeah".
Fingertips. The Beatles allowed Ringo Starr to sing "Boys", and it soon became known as "Ringo's Theme".
"My girl says when I kiss her lips,
Gets a thrill through her fingertips".
Wine. The Beatles never really liked this song and often inserted the lyrics, 'a waste of money'.
"A taste of honey... tasting much sweeter than wine".
Off The Beatles Track. Producer George Martin wanted to record a live album at the famous Cavern in Liverpool but it was technically impossible in those days so the recording took place at Abbey Road studios in London on 11th February 1963 in a 10 hour session (amazing isn't it?).
Iris Caldwell. She was Rory Storm's sister. Rory Storm (Alan Caldwell was his real name) was the singer in "Rory Storm And The Hurricanes" Ringo Starr's previous band.
The Beatles wanted to give "Misery" to a 17 year-old British singer, Helen Shapiro (which was part of their first UK tour in February 1963) but her producer turned it down. What was his name ? | Albums By The Beatles "Please Please Me"
|
Norrie Parramor. Kenny Lynch (who was also part of the tour) took the opportunity to become the first singer to record a Lennon-McCartney song : "Misery" of course.
The Shirelles. "Boys" was the song performed by Ringo on stage during the first US summer tour in 1964 . During the Beatles "live" period he used to perform either "Boys" or "I Wanna Be Your Man" . During their last British tour (December 1965) he used to perform "Act Naturally" .
Pete Best's final radio performance as a Beatles drummer occured on 11th June 1962 at the BBC (in which they performed "Ask Me Why" amongst other songs. What was the name of the show ? | Albums By The Beatles "Please Please Me"
|
Teenager's Turn (Here We Go). Poor Pete Best was replaced by Ringo Starr on 16th August 1962 . Actually Ringo did his first gig with the boys two days later in Birkenhead. I think Pete is one of the unluckiest people of the 20th century.
"Love Me Do" was recorded twice (on 4th and 11th September 11th 1962). The first session featured Ringo on drums. Another drummer was hired by producer George Martin for the second session. Which was his name? | Albums By The Beatles "Please Please Me"
|
Andy White. George Martin was mistrustful about Ringo (having been disappointed by Pete Best) so he hired Andy White . The first single (released 5th October 1962) featured Ringo on drums but the LP version (released 22nd March 1963) featured Andy White.
On 1st June 1963 during the BBC radio show "Pop Go The Beatles" host Lee Peters did an impersonation while introducing "Baby It's You" . Which British actor did he imitate ? | Albums By The Beatles "Please Please Me"
|
James Mason. The Beatles enjoyed these BBC shows ("love these Goon shows" said John) where they could show their wit .
A Waste Of Money. On the Hamburg tapes one can hear Paul dedicate this song to a Scottish lady (but I won't tell you her name because this may be a question in another quiz) .
The Beatles used to start their shows by singing "Twist And Shout" but occasionally during their first US summer tour (19th August to 20th September 1964) they used to perform another song instead of "Twist And Shout" . Which one ? | Albums By The Beatles "Please Please Me"

I Saw Her Standing There. The song most played during their concerts (about 1600) was Little Richard's "Long Tall Sally" but they always finished the shows with it: this was the last song ever played live by the Beatles at Candlestick Park in San Francisco on August 29th 1966 .
Seventeen. Talking about "I Saw Her Standing There" of course. Opening line: "She was just seventeen..."
Chains, Boys, Baby It's You. The Beatles recorded a total of 5 girl group songs on their first two albums. On "Please Please Me":
"Chains" by The Cookies
"Boys" and "Baby It's You" by the Shirelles.
On "With the Beatles":
"Devil in his Heart" by the Donays
"Please Mr. Postman" by the Marvelettes
Twist and Shout. They did only two takes of "T&S". What you hear--on one of the of the greatest performances in the history of recorded music--is the first take. God Bless the Beatles!
Vee Jay. Vee Jay was a Chicago blues label that agreed to release the Beatles music when Capitol, EMI's American subsidiary, passed on them. This album saved Vee Jay from bankruptcy--for a while.
Introducing the Beatles. The song "Please Please Me" was not a hit in America until 1964. Without name recognition, it made no sense to release the LP as "PPM".
The Isley Brothers. But let's face it--the Beatles' version blew the Isley Brothers away!
8. To be specific:
"I Saw Her Standing There"
"Misery"
"Ask Me Why"
"Please Please Me"
"Love Me Do"
"P.S. I Love You"
"Do You Want to Know a Secret?"
"There's a Place"
Not bad for a pair of rookies!
Helen Shapiro. Helen Shapiro rejected it. But she DID record "A Teenager Sings the Blues"! What, you never heard of it? Have you been living under a rock your entire life? Geez!
Billy J. Kramer and the Dakotas. BJK and the Dakotas also had a hit with Lennon & McCartney's "Bad to Me". None of the Liverpool bands--except for the Beatles, of course--had overwhelming success. RS and the Hurricanes never did get a recording contract and Rory, who was the first person to call Richard Starkey 'Ringo', died in a suicide pact with his mother. (Thought I'd end the quiz on a cheery note!)
