Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which was the original title of the LP "Please Please Me" ?

Answer: Off The Beatles Track

Producer George Martin wanted to record a live album at the famous Cavern in Liverpool but it was technically impossible in those days so the recording took place at Abbey Road studios in London on 11th February 1963 in a 10 hour session (amazing isn't it?).
2. "I Saw Her Standing There" was inspired by Paul McCartney's girlfriend at the time. What was her name?

Answer: Iris Caldwell

She was Rory Storm's sister. Rory Storm (Alan Caldwell was his real name) was the singer in "Rory Storm And The Hurricanes" Ringo Starr's previous band.
3. The Beatles wanted to give "Misery" to a 17 year-old British singer, Helen Shapiro (which was part of their first UK tour in February 1963) but her producer turned it down. What was his name ?

Answer: Norrie Parramor

Kenny Lynch (who was also part of the tour) took the opportunity to become the first singer to record a Lennon-McCartney song : "Misery" of course.
4. A female US band (one of the Beatles' favourites) used to record "Boys". Which one is it ?

Answer: The Shirelles

"Boys" was the song performed by Ringo on stage during the first US summer tour in 1964 . During the Beatles "live" period he used to perform either "Boys" or "I Wanna Be Your Man" . During their last British tour (December 1965) he used to perform "Act Naturally" .
5. Pete Best's final radio performance as a Beatles drummer occurred on 11th June 1962 at the BBC (in which they performed "Ask Me Why" amongst other songs). What was the name of the show ?

Answer: Teenager's Turn (Here We Go)

Poor Pete Best was replaced by Ringo Starr on 16th August 1962 . Actually Ringo did his first gig with the boys two days later in Birkenhead. I think Pete is one of the unluckiest people of the 20th century.
6. It took two sessions to record "Please Please Me" . The first one occured on 11th September 1962 (in which "Love Me Do" and "P.S I Love You" were also recorded). The second took place on 26th November 1962 . Two other songs were recorded that day . One was "Ask Me Why" (the flipside to "Please Please Me"). Which of these was the other one ?

Answer: Tip Of My Tongue

This Lennon-McCartney song was never released by the Beatles. They gave it to Tommy Quickly (which was another artist managed by Brian Epstein) but it never did anything good in the charts. To this day there is no trace left of the Beatles' recording.
7. "Love Me Do" was recorded twice (on 4th and 11th September 11th 1962). The first session featured Ringo on drums. Another drummer was hired by producer George Martin for the second session. Which was his name?

Answer: Andy White

George Martin was mistrustful about Ringo (having been disappointed by Pete Best) so he hired Andy White . The first single (released 5th October 1962) featured Ringo on drums but the LP version (released 22nd March 1963) featured Andy White.
8. On 1st June 1963 during the BBC radio show "Pop Go The Beatles" host Lee Peters did an impersonation while introducing "Baby It's You" . Which British actor did he imitate ?

Answer: James Mason

The Beatles enjoyed these BBC shows ("love these Goon shows" said John) where they could show their wit .
9. In the early days in Hamburg how did the Beatles introduce "A Taste Of Honey" while on stage ?

Answer: A Waste Of Money

On the Hamburg tapes one can hear Paul dedicate this song to a Scottish lady (but I won't tell you her name because this may be a question in another quiz) .
10. The Beatles used to start their shows by singing "Twist And Shout" but occasionally during their first US summer tour (19th August to 20th September 1964) they used to perform another song instead of "Twist And Shout" . Which one ?

Answer: I Saw Her Standing There

The song most played during their concerts (about 1600) was Little Richard's "Long Tall Sally" but they always finished the shows with it: this was the last song ever played live by the Beatles at Candlestick Park in San Francisco on August 29th 1966 .
