From Quiz Anatomy of an Album: "Please Please Me"

The Beatles are smiling down on us from the EMI building in Manchester Square, London, in 1963. The photograph was taken by Welsh photographer Angus McBean. McBean started in photography before WWII and was well known for his theatrical portraits of Vivian Leigh, Lawrence Olivier, John Gielgud and many more. In spite of his long career he never achieved international recognition. How ironic that more than 40 years after his now world famous photograph of the Fab Four for their first album cover, a number of his colour transparencies were thrown out at the headquarters of EMI. The Beatles record label Parlophone was one of the stable of record labels owned by EMI.

Billy J. Kramer and The Dakotas had a number two hit on the UK chart with "Do You Want To Know A Secret" in 1963. It did not chart in the US. Billy J. Kramer was one lucky guy to have been managed by Brian Epstein and to have Lennon/McCartney songs available to record. Epstein even hired Manchester group The Dakotas to be his backing group. There is a story that Epstein offered "Do You Want To Know A Secret" to British group Shane Fenton and The Fentones before he offered it to Billy J. If he did and Shane Fenton, who's short UK chart career was already over turned it down, it must rank as one of the biggest pop mistakes of the century.
