Rolling Stones Trivia Questions

1. In 1966 the Rolling Stones recorded a baroque pop song in which Mick pledges his troth to somebody. Who?

From Quiz
The Rolling Stones...A Blues Cover Band??

Answer: Lady Jane

'Baroque Pop' was a genre popular in the 1960, where artists incorporated classical instruments and motifs into their songs. Among them are standouts like Left Banke's 'Walk Away Renee', the Beatles' 'In My Life' and Procol Harum's 'Whiter Shade of Pale'. 'Lady Jane' (Jagger/Richards) first appeared on the Stone's album 'Aftermath', and was on the flip side of 'Mother's Little Helper'. Peaking at number 24 on Billboard Hot 100, that single was one of the few where both songs made the charts. Brian Jones played dulcimer and as Keith Richards explained, "Brian was getting into dulcimer then because he dug Richard Farina. We were also listening to a lot of Appalachian music then too. To me, Lady Jane is very Elizabethan." Suggestions as to who or what 'Lady Jane' referred to include drugs, lady bits, Queen Jane Seymour and Mick Jagger's girlfriend at the time. Mick himself stated that he didn't really know, that the song was 'weird'.

2. "Gimme Shelter" was released as a single in what year?

From Quiz Song by Song: "Gimme Shelter"

Answer: 1969

3. Who wrote the opening riff of "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction"?

From Quiz Song by Song: "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction"

Answer: Keith Richards

Steven Van Zandt, a guitarist for Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band, called it "the riff heard round the world." Rolling Stone magazine reports that the riff that defines this song came to Keith Richards "in a dream one night" while the Rolling Stones were on their third tour in the U.S. in May of 1965. The Rolling Stones guitarist and songwriter "woke up and grabbed a guitar and a cassette machine" before falling right back to sleep. That riff, Rolling Stone magazine avers, "transformed the rickety jump and puppy love of early rock & roll into rock."

4. Mick Jagger shares writing credits for "Paint It, Black" with what other member of the Rolling Stones?

From Quiz Song by Song: "Paint it, Black"

Answer: Keith Richards

The song was originally released with a comma in its title - "Paint It, Black," though the comma was later dropped. This quiz will use the original title. The song was released as a single in the U.S. on May 7, 1966 and in the UK on May 13, 1966. It hit number one on both countries' single charts. Rolling Stone magazine ranked "Paint It, Black" number 176 on its "Greatest Songs of All Time" list.

5. Who wrote "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction"?

From Quiz Can't Get no Satisfaction

Answer: Jagger and Richards

Following a concert in Clearwater, Florida on May 6, 1965, Keith Richards woke up from a dream with the guitar riff in his head. He recorded it quickly and fell back asleep while recording an additional forty minutes of snoring. Mick Jagger then wrote the lyrics in ten minutes while by the hotel pool.

He was a versatile musician, playing a wide variety of instruments on Stones' recordings: the sitar on "Paint It, Black" and the dulcimer on "Lady Jane", for example. However, in the late 1960s Jones succumbed to the temptations of narcotics and was fired from the band in June 1969. From Quiz The Rolling Stones - "Some Girls"

Answer: United States

The Stones continued their pattern, going back to 1966, of touring the US every three years. They played indoor and outdoor US venues during June and July, ranging from 80,000-seat football stadiums to intimate clubs. Their 1978 tour is widely regarded as the worst US performances the band ever did. The Stones lacked the imaginitive stage props used in their 1972 and 1975 tours, and the tight and professional musicianship shown in the 1980s and beyond. In most shows, they didn't even bother with an encore.
