They Might Be Giants
1990. It's in the 'Theme from Flood': 'It's a brand new record for 1990 - They Might Be Giants' brand new album, 'Flood.'' The word 'record' is a pun here - it also refers to the ocean levels 'rising up.'
prosthetic foreheads on their real heads. 'Someone in this town wants to stop the ones who want a rock to wind a piece of string around, but everybody wants a rock to wind a piece of string around.' The same goes for prosthetic foreheads on their real heads.
People just liked it better that way.. 'Even old New York was once New Amsterdam. Why they changed it I can't say - people just liked it better that way!' Later the lyrics note that the change to Istanbul is 'nobody's business but the Turks.'
a cracking whip. The only lyrics are 'Minimum wage! Yaaah!', followed by a whipcrack and then about a half minute of instrumental music. Some liner notes evidently claim that the song is 12 seconds long, but it's always seemed longer to me and to most discographers ...
'There's something beside the shoreline, coming up from the shipwreck, moving across the beachhead, making as if to say' ... what? | They Might Be Giants - 'Flood'

'Women and men'. The song is called 'Women and Men.' The other quotes are all lyrics from this album, including the songs 'Someone Keeps Moving My Chair' and 'Hot Cha.' 'Whistling in the Dark' contains the quote about changing your mind.
In Track 6, the singer complains to a friend of his about 'your ______ friend,' whom he'd met at a party. What kind of friend is it? | They Might Be Giants - 'Flood'

racist. 'This is where the party ends - I can't stand here listening to you and your racist friend.' At the end of the song, when the racist friend has apologized, the singer observes: 'Can't shake the devil's hand and say you're only kidding.'
Triangle Man . Triangle Man also defeats Person Man, while Universe Man keeps himself above the fray.
blue canary. 'Blue canary in the outlet by the light switch, who watches over you.'
'whistling in the dark'. The other choices are lines from other songs. 'Whistling in the Dark' is quite surreal.
She's An Angel. This song was originally supposed to include an accordion bass but the Johns say they got distracted and forgot to put it in.
Everything Right Is Wrong Again. This song may be based on the movie "The Long Trailer" starring Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz.
"Take me back to Constantinople. No, you can't go back to Constantinople. Been a long time gone, Constantinople. Why did Constantinople get the works? That's nobody's business but the Turks." | The Band that Might Be Giants

Istanbul. This song is from the band's third album, "Flood". The song rocks, but the music video is really weird. The video doesn't show Istanbul at all.
Exquisite Dead Guy. From the album "Factory Showroom".
Sidney. Mr. Linnell generally signs autographs as "John Sid".
keyboards and accordian. Mr. Linnell most often plays keyboards and accordian; however you can also catch him playing a multitude of other instruments on various songs. Some other instruments he plays in TMBG songs are clarinet, acoustic guitar, saxophone, harmonica, trumpet, violin, xylophone, banjo, bass and the organ.
Henry. Henry Linnell can be seen on the "Gigantic" DVD. They Might Be Giants also has a record named "John Henry"!
wrist. Mr. Linnell broke his wrist in an accident while working as a bike messenger. Band member John Flansburgh set up Dial-A-Song (an answering machine which plays random They Might Be Giants songs when it is working) to keep the music flowing while Mr. Linnell was unable to perform.
The Mundanes. Before joining TMBG, Mr. Linnell was in a full jazz band called The Mundanes.
states. John Linnell's side project is a cd named "State Songs". On this cd you can hear songs such as "South Carolina", "Maine", "Oregon" and "New Hampshire".

high school. They did talk about junior high a bit in their documentary, but they didn't spend much time together then. They started writing songs together when they were in high school in Lincoln, Massachusetts.

both. They share the title of 'vocalist' equally, and both do a great job at it, I might add!
Boss of Me. 'Boss of Me' is the theme for the television show 'Malcolm in the Middle' and TMBG won a Grammy for the song. Sadly and most surprisingly, it's the only Grammy they've won in the band's first 25 years.
