Shortly thereafter, a daughter (Therese, Madame Royale)was born.

f. Antoinette never said this. There are two possible explanations as to the origin of this phrase. Many believe it was actually said much earlier, by an aunt of Louis XIV, during the Fronde, a small uprising when the royal family was housed in the Louvre. Others feel that the current French word for cake, 'gateau', was very close in pronunciation to another word, meaning a type of plain bread. In any event, Antoinette never said it.

Sister-in-law. Madame Elizabeth was Louis XVI's sister. Of the four left alive after the King was beheaded, only Therese, Antoinette's daughter, survived. She was returned to Austria, her mother's homeland.

Incest. Louis, Antoinette's son, aged 10, was taken from her after Louis XVI's death and spent all of his time with Antoinette's captors. They grilled the boy to say that his mother had had sexual intimacy with him, along with other unspeakble charges. Since many of her captors had grown to respect, like and admire Antoinette during her captivity, the more vehement of the revolutionaries wanted to seal Antoinette's fate....dealth....with as many untrue accusations as possible.
