Answer: The people of Ai

Ai was a Canaanite city. The city name means "heap of ruins". Joshua and the other Israelites conquered it on their second try. The 30,000 men that Joshua had ready were told that God would conquer the city so they did not have to be afraid.

The other choices: Ur was the city which Abram (later Abraham) came from. Bethlehem, of course, is the city in which Jesus was born. And Cairo is not mentioned in the King James Version, but it is the capital of Egypt today and Egypt is mentioned several times in the King James Version.

14 After the Israelites overtook Jericho, what city did they attack next?
Answer: Ai

In Joshua 7 Joshua sent spies into the land of Ai. They came back saying that the city was so small that they only needed two or three thousand men to attack it. So three thousand men went and attacked the city. But the men of Ai defeated the Israelites, killing thirty-six men. When Joshua heard of this he prayed to God asking him why the Israelites were defeated. God said that the Israelites had stolen the holy items from Jericho and put them into their own possessions. But if the people who did this were destroyed, then they would be able to defeat their enemies. Joshua had the nation of Israel come forth by tribe and God pointed out the tribe of Judah. Then he had the clans of Judah come forth and God pointed out the clan of Zerahites. He had the Zerahites come forth by family and God pointed out Zimri's family. Then he had that family come forth, man by man and Achan was pointed out. Achan then confessed that he had stolen some things and they were buried in his tent. Joshua sent some men and they found what they were looking for. Then Achan and his children were stoned and their remains were burned. The LORD forgave the Israelites. Then they attacked Ai again and they defeated them. This can be found in Joshua 7-8.

15 Where did Moses instruct the Israelites to build an altar to the Lord when they had entered Canaan?
Answer: Ebal

Joshua 8:30-35 of the NIV tells us that Moses instructed the Israelites to build an altar to the lord on Mount Ebal. They were to use stones, coat them with plaster, and not use any iron tool on them, and to write on them very clearly all the words of the law. Afterwards Joshua read all the blessings and curses of the law, then half the people stood on Mount Ebal and pronounced curses, while the other half of the people stood on Mount Gerizim and pronounced blessings.

16 The Gibeonites set out to deceive through their appearance. What were they trying to make the Israelites believe?
Answer: That they had come a long way and did not live in Canaan

"However, when the people of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and Ai, they resorted to a ruse: They went as a delegation whose donkeys were loaded with worn-out sacks and old wineskins, cracked and mended. The men put worn and patched sandals on their feet and wore old clothes. All the bread of their food supply was dry and moldy. Then they went to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal and said to him and the men of Israel, 'We have come from a distant country; make a treaty with us.'" (Joshua 9 v. 3-6)

And it worked!
