Stars
Zuben Elgenubi is in what Constellation? | Double Stars (almach) |
Libra. Pronounce that again please! This is a very wide double star in Libra.
Zosma, Denebola, Regulus and Algieba? | Constellation's Stars (LeoDaVinci) |

Yed Prior is in what constellation? | Stars And Their Constellations (Algomeysa) |
Ophiuchus. Yed Prior is also known as 'Delta Ophiuchi'.
Which is the ninth brightest star in the sky? | All About Stars (sriram_gubbi) |
Achernar. Achernar is a hot, blue, sub giant star present at the southern tip of the constellation Eridanus. It is a bit bulged at the centre due to its rapid rotation. Unfortunately, this star is invisible to most of the northern hemishpere along with other luminaries like Canopus, Alpha Centauri and stars of the southern cross. I am really lucky because from our place i.e. south India, almost all constellations are visible except some 2 or 3 which are also partly visible because our city is only 13 degrees north of the equator.
Which is the most luminous star of the Summer Triangle? | All About Stars (sriram_gubbi) |
Deneb. Summer Triangle is a beautiful triangle shaped asterism formed by Vega, Altair and Deneb. It is visible during summer in the northern hemisphere and during winter in the southern hemisphere. Vega and Altair are main sequence stars located within 30 light years whereas Deneb is a white supergiant located at a distance of more than 1000 light years! Though there are many stars which are so distant and still visible to the naked eye, Deneb is among the brightest stars in the night sky, which places it above all other stars which are equally distant.
Which is the brightest star of the Winter Triangle? | All About Stars (sriram_gubbi) |
Sirius. The Winter Triangle is the counterpart of the famous Summer Triangle. The Winter Triangle is visible during winter in the northern hemisphere and during autumn in the southern hemisphere. This winter asterism is formed by Sirius, Procyon and Betelgeuse. This triangle has brighter component stars and is somewhat smaller than the Summer Triangle.
Which is the brightest F-class (yellow-white) star in the night sky? | All About Stars (sriram_gubbi) |
Canopus. Canopus is a lesser known southern hemisphere star though it is the second brightest star in the night sky. Rigel is a blue star whereas Antares is red. Wezen, though yellow-white, is not the brightest. Canopus is one of my favourite stars. I dont know why.
Which is brighter (in apparent magnitude): Vega or Deneb? | Stars and Constellations (Ace417) |
Vega . Vega's apparent magnitude is .03 and Deneb's is 1.25. (But in absolute magnitude, Deneb is much brighter.)
Which constellation is the star Alshain in? | Stars and Constellations #1 (m_paganini) |
Aquila. The star Altair is also in this constellation. It is the eagle.
Which constellation is 'the Queen'? | Stars And Constellations III (Ace417) |
Which constellation has two pieces Caput (The Head) and Cauda (The Body) separated by over 10 degrees? | Facts About Constellations (tralfaz) |
Serpens. It is any surpise that between the two parts of the snake is Orphiuchus (The Serpent Bearer).
Which constellation does not have a star above the fifth magnitude? | Facts About Constellations (tralfaz) |
Mensa. Mensa (The Table) is the dimmest constellation.
Caelum (The Engaving Tool), Horologium (The Clock), and Sextans (The Sextant) each have 2 stars above the 5th magnitude.
Which constellation contains the star Vega? | Stars And Constellations III (Ace417) |
Lyra. Vega is in Lyra, the Lyre (a sort of harp). If the earth lasts as long as 10,000 years, the star Vega will then become the new North Star!
Which constellation contains the star Cor Caroli? | Facts About Constellations (tralfaz) |
Canes Venatici. This brightest star in Canes Venatici was named by Edmond Halley to honor King Charles I of England.
Which constellation contains the Big Dipper? | Stars And Constellations III (Ace417) |
Which among the following is the most luminous star? | All About Stars (sriram_gubbi) |
Aludhra. Aludhra is an ultra luminous blue-white supergiant in the constellation of Canis Major. Saiph is also a supergiant, but much smaller. Bellatrix is a less luminous, blue giant. Mizar is a normal main sequence star.
Which among the following is an example of a hypergiant? | All About Stars (sriram_gubbi) |
Eta Carinae. Canopus is a bright giant or a lesser supergiant, Capella and Bellatrix are just giants. Eta Carinae is one of the most massive stars in our galaxy. It's about a hundred times more massive than our Sun which is the limit mass for stars above which a star may tear itself apart by its own radiation! This star is present in the Eta Carinae nebula. Now, it is a dim 5th magnitude star but in the 1800s, due to a violent outburst, it flared up to a magnitude of -1.3 and tied with Sirius in brightness! Recent researches have shown that Eta Carinae is likely to be a double star.
What was the original name of Apus? | Facts About Constellations (tralfaz) |
Avis Indica. Confusion between two constellations Avis Indica (The Bird of Paradise) and Apis (The Bee) led to the hybrid Apus which is still given the English translation "Bird of Paradise"
Quadra Euclidis (Euclid's Square) became Norma (The Ruler)
Pyxis Nautica (The Sailor's Compass) has been shortened to Pyxis
Reticulum Rhomboidalis (The Rhombodial Net) has been shortened to Reticulum
What was the first constellation added to Ptolemy's list? | Facts About Constellations (tralfaz) |
Coma Berenices. By Tycho Brahe around 1590
What type of star is the Pistol? | All About Stars (sriram_gubbi) |
hypergiant. The Pistol star is a 'hypergiant' (a term used for stars which are more luminous than supergiants). It is more massive than Eta Carinae! Being one of the most luminous and massive stars in our galaxy, it is located near the galactic centre in the constellation of Sagittarius. It is said to have created a nebula around it by the rapid ejection of its mass. This nebula is called the Pistol Nebula because of its pistol shape.
What three stars form the Summer Triangle? | Stars and Constellations #1 (m_paganini) |
Deneb, Altair, and Vega. I hope you didn't pick Orion, Leo, and Ursa Major! They're constellations, not stars.
What is the common name for Alpha Ursae Minoris? | Stars and Constellations #1 (m_paganini) |
Polaris. Polaris is also known as the North Star. Kochab is one of the guard stars. And Mizar is a star in Ursa Major.
What is the closest number to the Sun's APPARENT magnitude? | Stars and Constellations (Ace417) |
-27. The apparent magnitude is how bright the star seems to us. The lower the number, the brighter it is. (Note: a star with an apparent magnitude of 437 is waaaaaaaaaay too dim to be seen.)
What is another name for the Little Bear? | Stars and Constellations #1 (m_paganini) |
Ursa Minor. Ursa Major is the big bear and Leo is the Lion.
What element do astronomers look for in the spectra of faint objects to differentiate between low-mass stars and brown dwarfs? | The Forgotten Stars (H0lyAerith) |
Lithium. With very faint sources, it is difficult to distinguish a low-mass star from a brown dwarf. The presence of lithium reveals the object to be a brown dwarf. Brown dwarfs never attain the mass or pressure needed to initiate thermonuclear hydrogen burning in their cores like normal stars. During hydrogen burning, stars destroy the lithium in their cores and convert it into two helium atoms. Brown dwarfs never reach this stage and therefore retain their lithium forever.
What does the acronym "LBV" stand for? | All About Stars (sriram_gubbi) |
Luminous Blue Variables. This name, followed with some numbers, is given to some ultra massive, highly luminous hypergiants which are usually present in dense star forming regions like the Eta Carinae nebula or associations of stars like the OB association in Cassiopeia.
What did Eduardo L. Martin and Gibor Basri discover about the brown dwarf PPI 15 in the Pleiades? | The Forgotten Stars (H0lyAerith) |
It was part of a binary system with another brown dwarf. They were able to determine that PPI 15 had a brown dwarf companion. The two brown dwarfs have an orbital period of six days. Using this information, the masses of the two brown dwarfs can be calculated.
What constellation represents a unicorn? | Facts About Constellations (tralfaz) |
Monoceros. Monoceros is Greek for "one-horn"
What constellation is the star Nizari in? | Stars and Constellations #1 (m_paganini) |
It is not a star. Nizari is just a name I made up. Caprio and Berin are not constellations. I hope you didn't pick them. Sextans is the sextant. This is the end of the quiz. I hope you enjoyed it and don't forget to try the second one if you did well!(or not so well)
What constellation is the King? | Stars and Constellations (Ace417) |
Cepheus. Cetus is the Whale, and Bootes is the Herdsman. And Elvis is dead! :o)
What constellation is Procyon in? | Stars and Constellations (Ace417) |
Canis Minor. Procyon has an apparent magnitude of .38 and an absolute magnitude of 2.6.
