Interesting Questions, Facts, and Information

    Barnet

    What is Barnet's nickname?Barnet FC

The Bees. The nickname is sourced from the town apiary, which was behind the club's homeground in the early 1900s. Though it upsets Brentford fans intensely, they share the name the Bees, Barnet's colours (black and amber) are closer to a bee's colours than Brentford's red and white. West Bromwich Albion are the Baggies, named after the baggy trousers worn by the iron workers who originally formed the team. The Hornets are nearby Watford FC, and the Baa Baas are actually the rugby combined international team, the Barbarians.

What were the main team colours in season 2004-05?Barnet FC

Black and amber. Though the pattern and shade changed virtually every year, the amber varying from yellow at one extreme to orange at the other, they always keep to the same basic colours.

Why was their home ground declared unfit for Football League status, when they won promotion at the end of the 2004-05 season?Barnet FC

All of these (Sloping pitch, Small capacity, Poor facilities). Unfortunately, though they had been trying to upgrade to Football League status for years, no alternative sites or planning permission to extend had been granted. The Football League requires that all grounds be brought up to League standard within 3 years of promotion. The pitch had a slope that would mean rebuilding the stands to remove the corresponding slope if flattened, and the capacity was officially 5660.

Which extra facility did the home sitting fans have?Barnet FC

All of these (Covered seats, Private bar, Indoor canteen). Unlike some bigger clubs, Barnet had room to allow fans into their private bar. The standing area behind the goal was uncovered, but fans were allowed to move elsewhere if it rained.

Which ex-England player became their player-manager on 1st November 2000, moving John Still to the position of Director of Football?Barnet FC

Tony Cottee. Tony Cottee's best years were at West Ham United, moving a number of times before leading Barnet in their relegation year 2000-01. He played up front and was the second highest goalscorer of the season. Ian Hendon was their captain in the promotion season 2004-05 (Conference Champions), ex Northampton Town. Danny Maddix joined as a player from Queens Park Rangers and was coach in 2004-05. Martin Allen was the previous manager, but unlike his brother Clive, never played for England. Brother Bradley was also a top footballer.

Who was Barnet manager in 2004-05, when they finished Conference Champions, and were promoted back to the Football League?Barnet FC

Paul Fairclough. The others are previous managers, and they changed them so often it was hard to keep up. They were first promoted to the Football League as 1990-91 as Conference Champions.

Barnet's first home ground was Queens Road (1888-1901), and they then moved to Totteridge Lane. When did they move to Underhill Stadium?Barnet FC

1907. Though it's called Underhill, the road of that name is actually on the next block to the ground. Barnet Lane had one entrance to the ground, and Pricklers Hill was the main road.

Which station was nearest to Underhill Stadium?Barnet FC

High Barnet. High Barnet is the last station on the London Underground Northern line, almost opposite the ground. New Barnet is the nearest National rail station about a mile to the east.

Who did they have to beat at home on the last day of the 2000-01 season to stay up?Barnet FC

Torquay United. If Barnet beat Torquay, Torquay would have gone down instead of them. Instead Torquay scored three goals and Barnet couldn't catch up and lost 2-3. If Barnet had beaten Carlisle earlier in the season at home instead of losing again they would have stayed up. Exeter followed them down the next year, while Torquay were then promoted and were later in the division above.

Barnet were a member of the Football League from 1991-92 to 2000-01. Using the pre-1992 divisions to avoid confusion, what was the highest division Barnet ever reached in the Football League?Barnet FC

      3. They were promoted from the old division 4 for one season 1993-1994, only to go bust and be relegated again at the end of the season, in last place.
