The club also adopted Victoria Park as their home ground this year, and were originally named Hatlepools United until 1968, when they were renamed as just Hartlepool, and in 1977 they became Hartlepool United.

Priest was manager between 1908-12, followed by Humphreys for one season, Manners (1913-20), and Potter between 1920-22.

They got this name in strange fashion. A French ship, the "Chasse Marree" come aground on the coast of Hartlepool during the Napoleonic war. No survivors were onboard, apart from one monkey, dressed in French uniform. The locals, having never seen a Frenchman, thought the monkey was a spy, and sentenced it to death by hanging it from the mast of a shipping boat!

Hartlepool won the game 10-1 on 4th April, 1959, in a Division Four game.
