1. In 1982 Walter rushed for under 1,000 yards for one of only two times in his career, and had just one touchdown.
True. A rarity these days.
Sweetness. One of the greatest nicknames of all time in my opinion.
Jackson State. Payton followed the footsteps of older brother Eddie and went to Jackson State in Mississippi. He chose a predominantly African-American college close to home. Other famous small college players out of Mississipi were Jerry Rice (Mississippi Valley State), and Brett Favre (Southern Mississippi).
Outstanding Player of the Year in Division 1-AA College Football. The Walter Payton award is awarded to the Outstanding Player of the Year in Division 1-AA college football. Pretty much the Heisman of Division 1-AA.
t. The Bears won Super Bowl XX in 1986 by a score of 46-10, however, Walter did not reach the endzone. A controversial call by coach Mike Ditka to use William "The Fridge" Perry on the goal line to score prevented a possible TD for Payton.
Minnesota Vikings. Acheived on November 20, 1977, he also did this while having the flu.
Jim Brown; 1984; New Orleans Saints. October 7, 1984, against the New Orleans Saints, was the day Walter Payton broke Jim Brown's seemingly unbreakable career rushing record mark of 12,312 yards.
Gave his all whenever he was on the field. Although they could all pertain to Payton, he is actually quoted saying that he wanted to be remembered as the guy who gave his all whenever he was on the field.
1999. Payton passed away on November 1, 1999, in Chicago. He died of bile duct cancer. He was 45. His nickname of 'Sweetness', was given to him to mirror his personalty.
