Winnipeg Jets Trivia Questions

1. In a world of COVID-19 uncertainty, the NHL Entry Draft took place in October 2020, with the Winnipeg Jets holding onto the 10th overall pick. Which player, hailing from Whitby, Ontario, did they choose?

From Quiz
Winnipeg Jets : 2020-21

Answer: Cole Perfetti (C)

The NHL Entry Draft was originally planned to be held in Montréal, Québec, but was instead conducted virtually. With various trades made previously, the four named players were the only draft picks that the Winnipeg Jets got this year (in rounds 1, 2, 5, and 6). Their third round pick went to Ottawa, their fourth to Montréal, and their seventh to Toronto. As mentioned in the question, Cole Perfetti was the Jets' first round pick, coming 10th overall. He was assigned to the Manitoba Moose (the Jets' AHL affiliate) where he finished the 2020-21 season with a record of 9 goals and 17 assists for 26 points (in 32 games played). He capped off his inaugural season in the Jets organization by representing Canada at the IIHF World Championship (in Latvia), helping the national men's team to win gold! The other Jets draft picks were chosen as follows: Round 2 - #40 - Daniel Torgersson (LW), Sweden Round 5 - #133 - Anton Johannesson (D), Sweden Round 6 - #164 - Tyrel Bauer (D), Canada.

2. The Winnipeg Jets traded away their first round pick in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft in a February 25th trade with the New York Rangers, but they reacquired a first round pick on June 17th when they traded Jacob Trouba to which team?

From Quiz Winnipeg Jets : 2019-20

Answer: New York Rangers

The initial trade saw the NY Rangers send center Kevin Hayes to Winnipeg in exchange for left winger Brendan Lemieux, the first round pick (conditional on the Jets not earning pick #1,2 or 3), plus a fourth round pick in 2020 (also conditional). In June, the Jets traded defenseman Jacob Trouba to the Rangers, receiving their first round pick back, along with defenseman Neal Pionk. And with that first round pick at number 20, the Jets chose Finnish defenseman Ville Heinola. The remainder of the draft went as follows (with some picks traded away): Round 2 - #51 - Simon Lundmark (D), Sweden Round 4 - #113 - Henri Nikkanen (C), Finland Round 5 - #134 - Harrison Blaisdell (C), Canada Round 5 - #144 - Logan Neaton (G), United States.

3. The 2018 NHL Entry Draft was held in Dallas, TX on June 22nd and 23rd. Which fellow Canadian team, from the Atlantic Division, got to use Winnipeg's 29th overall first round draft pick?

From Quiz Winnipeg Jets : 2018-19

Answer: Toronto Maple Leafs

It took a couple of steps to get there, as the Jets traded away their first round pick to the St. Louis Blues as part of the deal that brought Paul Stastny to Winnipeg in Febuary. The Blues subsequently traded the pick to Toronto on the first day of the Draft weekend. Altogether, Winnipeg's 2018 selections in the draft went as such: Round 2 - #60 - David Gustafsson (C), Sweden Round 3 - #91 - Nathan Smith (C), United States Round 5 - #150 - Declan Chisholm (D), Canada Round 5 - #153 - Giovanni Vallati (D), Canada Round 6 - #184 - Jared Moe (G), United States Round 7 - #215 - Austin Wong (C), Canada.

4. The 2017 NHL Entry Draft was held in Chicago, IL, and the Winnipeg Jets' first pick came at number 24 overall. Which Finnish youngster did they choose?

From Quiz Winnipeg Jets : 2017-18

Answer: Kristian Vesalainen

The Jets' first overall pick was actually at #13, but they traded that pick away to the Vegas Golden Knights, receiving Columbus' #24 pick (that Vegas had acquired previously) in exchange along with expansion draft considerations (they protected a player). Vegas also got the Jets' third-round pick in 2019. Prior to his selection, Kristian Vesalainen had already reached the professional leagues of Sweden and Finland, even earning a spot on the top line of the Finnish Liiga team HPK (Hämeenlinnan Pallokerho). Altogether, the 2017 selections in the draft went as such: Round 1 - #24 - Kristian Vesalainen (LW), Finland Round 2 - #43 - Dylan Samberg (D), United States Round 3 - #74 - Johnathan Kovacevic (D), Canada Round 4 - #105 - Santeri Virtanen (F), Finland Round 5 - #136 - Leon Gawanke (D), Germany Round 6 - #167 - Arvid Holm (G), Sweden Round 7 - #198 - Skyler McKenzie (LW), Canada Round 7 - #211 - Croix Evingson (D), United States

5. At the 2016 NHL Entry Draft in Buffalo, NY, the Winnipeg Jets were sitting pretty with the number two overall pick (thanks to some luck in the draft lottery). They chose 18-year-old Patrik Laine... from what country?

From Quiz Winnipeg Jets : 2016-17

Answer: Finland

Before being drafted second overall by the Winnipeg Jets, the young Finnish phenom Patrik Laine played with Tappara in the Finnish Liiga. The original 'Finnish Flash' (Teemu Selanne) was his idol growing up, so being drafted by the Winnipeg Jets (albeit a different franchise) was a special thing for Laine. In all, the Winnipeg Jets drafted: Round 1 - #2 - Patrik Laine (RW), Finland Round 1 - #18 - Logan Stanley (D), Canada Round 3 - #79 - Luke Green (D), Canada Round 4 - #97 - Jacob Cederholm (D), Sweden Round 5 - #127 - Jordan Stallard (C), Canada Round 6 - #157 - Mikhail Berdin (G), Russia

6. At the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, the Winnipeg Jets had their first round pick at #17. Which other team's (a divisional rival) first round pick did they get to use?

From Quiz Winnipeg Jets : 2015-16

Answer: St. Louis Blues

With their strong showing in the 2014-15 season, the Winnipeg Jets were relegated to number 17 for their first round pick. So how did they get another first round pick? Funny you should ask. On February 28th, 2014, the Blues made a trade with the Buffalo Sabres that included their 2015 first round draft pick. On February 11th, 2015, the Jets made a trade with the Buffalo Sabres that included the lower of their two first round picks (theirs and St. Louis'). So, who did the Jets pick in the draft? Round 1 - #17 - Kyle Connor (LW), USA Round 1 - #25 - Jack Roslovic (C), USA Round 2 - #47 - Jansen Harkins (C), Canada Round 3 - #78 - Erik Foley (LW), USA Round 4 - #108 - Michael Spacek (RW), Czech Rep. Round 6 - #168 - Mason Appleton (C), USA Round 7 - #198 - Sami Niku (D), Finland Round 7 - #203 - Matteo Gennaro (C), Canada

7. Following the conclusion of the 2013-14 NHL season, the Winnipeg Jets began their workup to the 2014-15 season with the 2014 NHL Entry Draft. A Dane from the Halifax Mooseheads, who was the Jets' first pick, at ninth overall?

From Quiz Winnipeg Jets : 2014-15

Answer: Nikolaj Ehlers (LW)

Nikolaj Ehlers was drafted sixth overall by the Mooseheads in the 2013 CHL Import Draft, having played with EHC Biel (Switzerland) the previous year. In his first year with the Mooseheads (2013-14) he had a record of 49 goals and 55 assists for a total of 104 points in 63 games. Born February 14, 1996, Ehlers was 18 years old at the time of his drafting by the Winnipeg Jets. The four players listed as answer options were the Jets' first four picks; Danish Left Winger Nikolaj Ehlers (9th), American Defenseman Jack Glover (69th), American Centre Chase De Leo (99th), and Canadian Defenseman Nelson Nogier (101st). Rounding out their selections were American Forward Clinston Franklin (129th), Russian Centre Pavel Kraskovsky (164th), and American Forward Matt Ustaski (192nd).

8. It took two full seasons for the NHL Board of Governors to finally settle on a realignment that accounted for the Atlanta Thrashers becoming the Winnipeg Jets. Six divisions became four. In which division did the Jets find themselves?

From Quiz Winnipeg Jets : 2013-14

Answer: Central Division

The Eastern Conferences got eight teams in each of their (Atlantic & Metropolitan) divisions, while the Western Conference got seven teams each for their (Pacific & Central) divisions. In the Central Division, along with the Winnipeg Jets, were placed Chicago, Colorado, Dallas, Minnesota, Nashville, and St. Louis. Another major difference that came with realignment was the qualification for the playoffs. Before, it was the top team from each of the three (conference) divisions that qualified, followed by the next best five teams, regardless of division. With realignment, the top three teams in each of the two (conference) divisions qualify for the playoffs, with two wild card positions for the next best team records, regardless of division.

9. With the franchise having just moved from another city, and with no division realignment yet, what division did the Jets play in during their first year in Winnipeg?

From Quiz Winnipeg Jets : 2011-12

Answer: Southeast Division

As the Atlanta Thrashers, the franchise was part of the Southeast Division, which included the Washington Capitals, the Tampa Bay Lightning, the Florida Panthers, and the Carolina Hurricanes. After moving to Winnipeg, they stayed in the Eastern Conference and the Southeast Division, mostly because a division realignment meant having all the team owners agree on what a new alignment would look like. The Jets played their first two seasons while still a part of the Southeast Division, with all the travel headaches that implied.

10. After many years of rumours and innuendo, it was finally announced on May 31st 2011 that the True North Sports and Entertainment group (TNSE) had come to an agreement on the purchase of an NHL franchise. Which team did they buy?

From Quiz The Return of the Winnipeg Jets

Answer: Atlanta Thrashers

Mark Chipman, chairman of the board for TNSE, made the announcement at Winnipeg's arena, the MTS Centre (built in 2004). Prior to the announcement regarding the Atlanta Thrashers, there had been much anticipation on the fate of the Phoenix Coyotes, who were the original Jets franchise that left Winnipeg in 1996. In a last-minute bid, the city of Glendale, Arizona voted to maintain the hefty debt payment required to cover the team's losses and prevent the NHL (who own the team) from moving the franchise elsewhere.

11. The 2021 NHL Entry Draft was held via video conference on July 23 and 24, with the Winnipeg Jets making the 18th overall pick. Which player, from the Minnesota Golden Gophers in the NCAA, did they pick?

From Quiz Winnipeg Jets : 2021-22

Answer: Chaz Lucius (C)

After being drafted by the Jets in 2021, Chaz Lucius spent the subsequent hockey season finishing up his collegiate career with the Minnesota Golden Gophers. He concluded the season by signing an entry-level contract with the Jets in April of 2022, after which he was assigned to the Jets' AHL affiliate, the Manitoba Moose. Lucius made his professional debut with the Moose in the fall of 2022, playing 12 games before being assigned to the Portland Winterhawks of the Western Hockey League for development. The other Jets draft picks were chosen as follows: Round 2 - #50 - Nikita Chibrikov (RW), Russia Round 3 - #82 - Dmitri Kuzmin (D), Belarus Round 5 - #146 - Dmitri Rashevsky (RW), Russia.

12. The Jets signed a number of players to short-term contracts or extensions in the off-season, but they also acquired a player from the Vegas Golden Knights that Vegas had originally acquired FROM Winnipeg in 2018. Who was that player?

From Quiz Winnipeg Jets : 2020-21

Answer: Paul Stastny

Paul Stastny was originally acquired by the Jets in February of 2018 with a view to provide some experience to the team and some of its younger stars in advance of an expected deep playoff run. The Jets finished second overall in scoring that year, and reached the conference finals in the Stanley Cup Playoffs in their best-ever franchise year. At the end of the season, however, Stastny signed as a free agent with the Vegas Golden Knights, locking in a three year contract with the expansion team. Fast forward to October of 2020. As the Jets sort out their team and contracts for the upcoming season, GM Kevin Cheveldayoff also chose to reacquire Paul Stastny in exchange for defenceman Carl Dahlström and a 2022 fourth-round pick, knowing that his contract (as before) would be up at the end of the season. In 56 games played in 2021, Stastny had 13 goals and 16 assists for 29 points. He was also the hero of the second game of the first round of the playoffs, providing the overtime goal in a 1-0 victory against the team to be named later in this quiz.

13. Free agent 'season' hit on July 1st, and Paul Stastny, whom the Jets had acquired in February from the Blues for their playoff push, signed a three-year contract with which new franchise?

From Quiz Winnipeg Jets : 2018-19

Answer: Vegas Golden Knights

After having just suffered being knocked out of the 2018 playoffs in the third round by the Vegas Golden Knights, to Jets fans it almost felt like a betrayal for Stastny to accept this contract. But, professional hockey is a business, and free agency is all about getting the best deal for your talents; and he got a pretty good deal signing a three-year contract. The Jets signed three free agents over the summer: Goaltender Laurent Brossoit from the Edmonton Oilers; Right winger Dennis Everberg from Neftekhimik Nizhnekamsk (KHL); Centre Seth Griffith from the Buffalo Sabres. The other players that left the Jets and signed as free agents with other teams were: Matt Hendricks (to Minnesota), Michael Hutchinson (to Florida), Patrice Cormier (to Barys Astana (KHL)), Buddy Robinson (to Calgary), Michael Sgarbossa (to Washington), Jan Kostalek (to Sparta Praha (ELH)), Jamie Phillips (to Charlotte Checkers (AHL)), Julian Melchiori (to Florida), and Tobias Enstrom (to Modo Hockey (Allsv.)).

14. The 2017 off season saw a number of player transactions including the acquisition and loss of a number of free agents. Which Jets goaltender accepted an offer for a one-year contract with the New York Rangers?

From Quiz Winnipeg Jets : 2017-18

Answer: Ondrej Pavelec

Ondrej Pavelec was originally drafted by the Winnipeg Jets franchise when they were still the Atlanta Thrashers. From the Czech Republic, Pavelec was chosen in the 2nd round, 41st overall in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft. He began his professional career with Atlanta's AHL affiliate, the Chicago Wolves, finally getting his NHL debut (and first NHL win) on October 20th, 2007 against the Tampa Bay Lightning. Over ten years with the Atlanta/Winnipeg franchise, Ondrej Pavelec played in 379 games, earning a record of 152 wins, 158 losses, and 47 OT/SO losses. He also achieved 17 shutouts in that time. On July 1st, 2017, Pavelec signed his one-year contract with the New York Rangers. The Jets signed six free agents over the summer: Goaltender Steve Mason from the Philadelphia Flyers; Defenseman Dmitry Kulikov from the Buffalo Sabres; Centre Mike Sgarbossa from the Florida Panthers; Right Winger Buddy Robinson from the San Jose Sharks; Defenseman Cameron Schilling from the L.A. Kings; and Left Winger Matt Hendricks from the Edmonton Oilers. The other players that left the Jets and signed as free agents with other teams were: Paul Postma (to Boston), Brenden Kichton (to Carolina), Brian Strait (to New Jersey), Anthony Peluso (to Washington), Quinton Howden (to Dinamo Minsk), Scott Kosmachuk (to the AHL Hartford Wolf Pack), and Mark Stuart (to Adler Mannheim).

15. Over the summer, eleven players signed new or extended contracts with the Jets organization. Which one of them, Winnipeg's first-ever draft pick in 2011, signed an eight-year extension?

From Quiz Winnipeg Jets : 2016-17

Answer: Mark Scheifele

Mark Scheifele was drafted seventh overall in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, then spent another year with the Barrie Colts of the Ontario Hockey League to continue developing his skills before joining the Jets full time for the 2013-14 season. With Scheifele's entry-level contract coming due at the end of the 2015-16 season (in which he broke the 20-goal mark for the first time), the Jets management wasted no time in securing Scheifele for the long-term. He went on to prove that their confidence in him was well-founded as he took the point-scoring title for the team in 2016-17.

16. Seven different players signed new or renewed contracts over the summer of 2015, including one player who returned to the Jets after playing two years with Ak Bars Kazan of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL). Who?

From Quiz Winnipeg Jets : 2015-16

Answer: Alexander Burmistrov

Alexander Burmistrov was born in Kazan, Russia, and he began his North American hockey career after being selected by the Barrie Colts in the 2009 CHL Import draft. The following year he joined the Atlanta Thrashers franchise, then moved with the team to Winnipeg in his second NHL season. During the 2012-13 season, he was often relegated to the Jets' farm team, which prompted him to return to Russia with the end of his contract in the offseason. With a different coach behind the Jets bench, Burmistrov decided to return to the team, signing a new two-year deal. Drew Stafford and Paul Postma also inked new two-year contracts, while rookie Brendan Lemieux (drafted in 2015) signed a three-year entry-level contract. One-year contracts were also agreed upon with Matt Halischuk, Patrice Cormier, and Adam Pardy during the offseason. Additionally, the Jets signed two free agents to one-year deals during the summer: Matt Fraser (from the Edmonton Oilers) and Andrew MacWilliam (from the Toronto Maple Leafs).

17. The 2013 NHL Entry Draft was held in New Jersey at the end of June. With the 13th-overall selection, the Winnipeg Jets chose a defenseman from the Prince Albert Raiders of the WHL. What was his name?

From Quiz Winnipeg Jets : 2013-14

Answer: Josh Morrissey

As a developing player, Josh Morrissey continued to play in the Western Hockey League for the 2013-14 season. With the Prince Albert Raiders, he accrued a record of 28 goals and 45 assists for 73 points over 59 games. He also played for Canada in the 2014 IIHF World Junior Championship in Malmö, Sweden, although the team did not win a medal, finishing in fourth place. A big highlight of Morrissey's year was being called up to join the St. John's IceCaps (the AHL affiliate of the Winnipeg Jets) for eight games during the 2014 Calder Cup Playoffs, including the five games of the Final against the Texas Stars.

18. Which Winnipeg Jet was part of the NHL Players' Association (NHLPA) Negotiating Committee that worked on establishing a new collective bargaining agreement with the NHL?

From Quiz Winnipeg Jets : 2012-13

Answer: Ron Hainsey

In all there were 31 players chosen from 21 different teams to be on the Negotiating Committee. It was not an easy job for these players, as they often got flack for their efforts - not only from fans, but even from other players. After the 2012-13 season was completed, Ron Hainsey became a free agent, and signed with the Carolina Hurricanes shortly before the beginning of the 2013-14 NHL season.

19. The Jets signed a number of players to short-term contracts or extensions in the off-season (summer of 2021), but they also re-signed a four-year contract to which defenseman, who began his career with the New York Rangers in 2017?

From Quiz Winnipeg Jets : 2021-22

Answer: Neal Pionk

Neal Pionk was never drafted by an NHL team, going unselected in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft year when he was eligible. After spending two years with the Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs, he forfeited the remainder of his collegiate career to pursue professional hockey, signing a two-year contract with the New York Rangers on May 1st, 2017. During his time with the Rangers, Pionk started with their AHL affiliate team, the Hartford Wolfpack, playing 48 games of the 2017-18 season with them before being promoted to the Rangers for his NHL debut on February 8th, 2018. Fast forward a year, and Pionk found himself traded to the Winnipeg Jets (along with a 2019 first-round pick) in a deal that sent defenseman Jacob Trouba to the Rangers on June 17th, 2019. With his trade, Pionk signed another two-year contract extension. With the 2021 offseason, Pionk was once again up for contract discussions, and this time around, he signed a new four-year contract, with a raise that essentially doubled his per annum salary.

20. With COVID-19 restrictions affecting every team differently, one of the biggest concerns was travel. To that end, the league realigned the divisions, with all seven Canadian teams being placed in the same division. What was it called?

From Quiz Winnipeg Jets : 2020-21

Answer: The North Division

In actuality, the full name of the division for the Canadian teams was the 'Scotiabank North Division', as the League sought corporate sponsorship to offset the loss of revenue from having few (or no) fans attending games due to COVID-19 restrictions. The other divisions were all similarly named, with the 'Discover Card Central Division', the 'MassMutual East Division', and the 'Honda West Division'. Additionally, many teams also took on corporate sponsorship that was displayed on helmets. For the Winnipeg Jets, this was Bell Canada.

21. Which Jets defenseman made headlines by not showing up for training camp and ultimately not returning to play at all?

From Quiz Winnipeg Jets : 2019-20

Answer: Dustin Byfuglien

There was a lot of mystery surrounding Dustin Byfuglien in September when he didn't report to training camp, which resulted in a suspension by the team. Then there was an announcement that he was taking an indefinite leave of absence. Rumours swirled around the reasons behind such a move, from injury to personal differences with management, to whatever you might imagine. Then came word that Byfuglien would be undergoing ankle surgery, after which he would be resuming his career. Rehabilitation went into January, but then another wrinkle appeared - Byfuglien filed a grievance against the Jets through the NHLPA challenging the suspension (and subsequent lack of pay). In the end, on April 17th after a lengthy dispute, Dustin Byfuglien and the Winnipeg Jets mutually agreed to terminate the remainder of their contract, which still had two years and many millions of dollars left on it.

22. During the July free-agency frenzy, General Manager Kevin Cheveldayoff also re-signed a number of players. Which record-setting Jets goaltender, drafted by the Jets in 2012, signed a six-year contract?

From Quiz Winnipeg Jets : 2018-19

Answer: Connor Hellebuyck

Connor Hellebuyck did it right. After earning the top goaltending spot ahead of Ondrej Pavelec in the 2016-17 season, he posted a 26-19-4 record in 56 games. That year in the off-season, Hellebuyck signed a one-year contract. He then went on to have a stellar season in 2017-18, putting up a 44-11-9 record in 67 games and setting a record for most wins in a season by an American goaltender. He was also a finalist for the Vezina Trophy for the top goaltender in the NHL.
