 'A Different World' - Actors and Characters
Kadeem Hardison. Kadeem Hardison also had a guest role in 'The Cosby Show' as Theo's friend.
Math. Dwayne prides himself on his knowledge of math.
Ron Johnson. Dwayne and Ron have been main characters on the show since the first season and lasted the life of the series.
Patti LaBelle. Patti Labelle later had her own show she co-starred in with Morris Chestnut. Their show 'Out All Night' premiered in 1992.
Colonel Taylor. Colonel Bradford Taylor as also known as Dr. War and Dr. Dare.
Marion. Whitley Marion Gilbert was played by Jasmine Guy. In the final season she became Whitley Marion Gilbert-Wayne after marrying Dwayne Wayne.
Kadeem Hardison. Kadeem Hardison has also had roles in "Touched By an Angel" and "White Man Can't Jump".
Mr. Gaines. Mr. Gaines was introduced in season 2, but joined the cast in season 3. Velma Gaines was his wife and Lena James was employed at The Pit.
Spencer Boyer. Spencer was introduced in the final season. He repeatedly asked Kim to marry him and she repeatedly turned him down. In the final episode she finally agreed to marry him.
One . Maggie Lauten was a journalism student portrayed by Oscar winner Marisa Tomei. Denise Huxtable was portrayed by Lisa Bonet. She spent several years on "The Cosby Show". Both Bonet and Tomei left after one season.

Freddie. Freddie arrives at Hillman and falls into instant "crush" with Dwayne. He never sees her as anything more than a friend, despite her brownies and poetry.
In this episode, "Dream Lover", Whitley and Dwayne share a dance and he attempts to touch a part of her that is off limits. This is one of the earliest signs he is romantically interested in her, and later her subconscious shows the same early signs. She goes to Lettie for advice, because she is inexperienced and is not sure what the dream actually means.

Head. In "That's the Trouble With You All" Whitley arranges a blind date for Dwayne, except for he does know what the girl looks like already. He and his date run into Julian and Whitley, and Whitley attempts to ruin the date because she is jealous of his obvious interest in the set up. When it comes time to kiss the slate clean, she is eager to kiss him right on the lips, but he doesn't allow it to happen that way.
Megan Lewis. Megan was played by an actress named Torri Whitehead. I never did spot her in any other TV roles or movies in the years immediately following this episode.

North Carolina. Walter is after Alvin Dix, played by Christopher Carter Hooks, but he is also pursued by Cap Conners, Walter's college mentor. Chris Hooks also played Vanessa's boyfriend Jeremy in an episode of "The Cosby Show" during the same time frame. Jeremy was the boy that had Vanessa staying out late and talking back to her parents. Cliff and Claire straightened Jeremy out with a quickness!

Santa Claus tries to mug her. She did buy Adele an expensive present, only to find out she doesn't like that particular type of collectible. So, Whitley is panicked and runs out to quickly purchase something better. Adele is none too pleased with her disappearance, but later comforts Whitley after she is attacked by Santa Claus and has her new present broken.
Lisa. Debbi Morgan played a fellow engineer named Lisa Westin. Dwayne meets her at a faculty party, where he spills wine on Whitley's expensive blouse and smashes barbecue ribs into Lisa's sweater. Whitley, already high strung over the engagement party, overreacts and is awful to Dwayne. Lisa, a more mature and less harried woman, does not get upset. This immediately sparks Dwayne's interest, as he is Whitley weary and in need of some positive female attention.
Liza is the look alike cousin of Whitley's, also played by Jasmine Guy in season 5.
Reverend Soams. When I saw it the first time, and every single time afterward, this scene's power does not escape me. Dwayne tries to be strong, but in the end he pleads with Whitley to marry him instead. After months apart, and his previous cold feet, in the end he cannot let her go without a fight. She, of course, turns to him immediately and finally runs down the isle to him, apologizing to Byron.
Michael Warren plays Whitley and Marion Gilbert's life long Reverend. Michael has guest starred, written and produced many TV shows over the years.
Cleofus/Marion. In the the episode when Dwayne and the gang are on vacation, Dwayne's middle name is read from the rental car contract. Woodson is Dwayne's father's name. In the "Whitley Scrooge" episode, her mother, Marion, played one of the visiting spirits. She called Whitley by her full name. "Whitley Marion Gilbert."
She thought he lied about being in her room past curfew. Dwayne was tutoring Denise in the study lounge of the girls dorm. When they realized they'd lost track of time, it was already past curfew. The only way to sneak out was through Whitley's room. Whitley was asleep, so she didn't see him. Dwayne let people think more was going on in that room than "sneaking out."

Suzanne. Suzanne, also Col. Taylor's daughter, dated Dwayne BEFORE he and Whitley really started to like each other.
Pookie. Whitley to Dwayne: "I'm never letting you go, not my Pookie."
Her feet. When they were quizzing each other for the "Academic Bowl," Dwayne told Whitley that he always thought she was beautiful, until she took her shoes off. He said she had feet like "Bubbles the Chimp." That may be because Jasmine Guy (Whitley) has been a dancer for years, and it can be pretty hard on the feet.
Ron. When Dwayne started dating Kinu, Whitley went out with Ron, Dwayne's best friend. She hoped it would make him jealous enough to dump Kinu, and be with her.
Kim. Dwayne's mother always made it a point to tell Dwayne, "Kimberly Reese, Kimberly Reese! That's the girl I want for you. She got pretty white teeth just like your mama!"
Kinishewa/E H Wright. Dwayne was an Engineering major, and Whitley was an Art History major. They both ended up getting full time positions with these companies.
Los Angeles. Dwayne and Whitley were on their honeymoon in Los Angeles during the riots that occurred after the police officers that beat Rodney King were acquitted. Because their rental car was stolen, Dwayne couldn't pick Whitley up from the mall and she was stranded for a while.
